If your vacuum doesn't turn on, make sure that plug is fully inserted into a fully functional electronic outlet. If it still not turning on after verifying this, it could be that the power switch is malfunctioning. You may need to replace the power switch by opening up the handle of your vacuum. I suggest referring to your manual on how to replace the power cord or contact Bissell for troubleshooting steps. 1-800-237-7691.

We all of the sudden have to hold the power button down to turn it on. As soon as we let go of the power button, the vacuum shuts off.

It sounds like the actual switch in the unit has failed. The switch has a spring in it that keeps it in the on position then pushes it to the off position when it is hit again. If you can get to it, you'll be able to check it out yourself and Bissell will probably send you one to replace it.
