Problem with Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player

blue ray player wont play blue ray ''Kung Fu Panda'' disc.

My Sony Blue Ray DVD player won't play Kung Fu Panda Blue Ray disc. Previews and menu runs properly. When I push play movie, this options shuts down the blue ray player. Any reason why? Can this be remedied?

    • I have the same problem, Kids bought me "The Mummy3" BlueRay for Christmas, after Mom let them in on daddy's secret gift: Sony S300. I can see the menu's but with in 3 seconds of playing the movie, it completly shuts downs and reboots. I've connected it via S-video cable and noticed it takes 2-3 minutes to load. Would this load faster if i had a HDMI conection? Is the picture quality much better then s-vid? I'll try the firmware update for the shutdown. Thanks

    • All my dvds and blu-ray discs from last year still play. The new ones this year (Kung Fu Panda and Wall-e) let me see the previews but will not allow me to watch the movie. I also see a new "Loading" bar at the bottom of my screen that I have never seen before.

    • That's the exact problem I have. I bought the disc at Costco and just returned it for another. The new disc has the same problem. I am very interested in a solution as well.

    • Can play everything except for the movie--it shows the actual people with lines who are doing the voiceovers--will not show the movie but the audio is playing correctly.  This is the bd dvd I' ve tried and both did the same thing.  All other dvd's play fine.

    • I have a problem, my blu-ray player will start up and play to the menu. When you select play movie it will start palying, lock up and re-boot. This does not happen with all blu-ray movies and never with a standard DVD.

Best Solution

i fixed this exactly as previous posted solutions, however a couple of points.
a) recordable CDs work if you don't have a DVD burner.
b) I didn't have a CD burner that would do an "image burn", I downloaded a free copy of "Express Burn" and that worked fine. The disk needs to be "finalised" or "fixated", it should do this automatically, or it may be a tick box selection.
c) I got a "No DWLD 09" when I put the disk into the player. I found this was an incompatibility with the CD-R (Maxwell) I was using. I changed to JVC and it worked fine.

You guys all need to upgrade the Firmware on the Sony Blue Ray player to the newest Revision - 4.3, released 10/31/08. If you do a search for Sony bdp-s300 Firmware, it will take you to Sony's website where you can download an .iso file to burn as an image onto a recordable CD - from there, you put the CD into your Blue Ray player and it will automatically update to the newest Firmware - takes about 30 minutes.
After this, you will be able to watch these movies that do not play currently.

Unable to play BD-R or BD-RE discs in the Blu-ray Disc® (BD) player. Solution
The Blu-ray Disc® (BD) player does not support BD-R and BD-RE discs right out of the box. However, a free firmware update is available that will provide compatibility with BD-R and BD-RE discs recorded in the BDMV format.
If your computer is equipped with a DVD burner and compatible burning software, you can download the update from the Drivers & Software section of the Sony® eSupport Web site and then burn your own update disc on a DVD-R or DVD-RW disc. If you do not have the capability of downloading and burning your own firmware update disc, you can register the BD player online at http://www.productregistration.sony.com/ and a firmware disc will be sent to you automatically; the shipping and receiving time for the disc is approximately 7-10 days via U.S. mail.
NOTES:

  • The firmware upgrade does not support BD-R and BD-RE discs recorded in the BDAV format.
  • Disc may not be played due to inadequate recording capability of the recording device.
  • Disc may not be played due to a disc being in poor condition.

    • I performed the firmware upgrade today. It worked. Here is the URL:

      http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=BDPS301&upd_id=3977&os_id=7

Follow the instructions to the letter and you will be watching Kung Fu Panda and other BD Roms.

This solution is really just confirming the previous solution, use the URL on previous solution, this takes you to the US sony site, Follow the instuctions to the letter, make sure you use the "Burn Image" Option on your CD burner and finalize the disc, Do not make a data disc! Do as it tells you 'Exactly' I can now watch "The Panda" No problem at all!!
