You will need to go into the control panel, administrator, and then disk drive manager. once there you will need to initialize the new drive and then format the drive before the system will see it. Format using the NTFS file system only if you are using XP, After the format is completed reboot the system and your new slave drive should show up just fine and you will be able to log into it or use explorer to view it.

Windows will recognize it. Just be sure the other drive is jumpered as master/primary and the old drive is jumpered as slave/secondary and that they connect to the same IDE cable.

Hello,

all you have to do is to simply set the jumper at the back of he hard disk, beside where the IDE cable and power enter into the hard disk.

Just keep setting till you put at the right position where the system recognizes it.

There is nothing wrong with your PC and hard drive, just set the jumper of the Hard disk and that should be all.

Take care.

HI,

What I would suggest, is to take the drive and install it as a slave drive. Make sure your pin settings on the drive are set to slave, and your main drive is set to slave. Then XP and Vista will recongize it so you can pull the data off it, then reformat the drive and see if you get any errors.

Good Luck

How do I make my MAXTOR Hard Drive 7Y250M0 a slave?

A slave drive is defined by removing the jumper (pin sleeve) completely from the drive. Then go into your BIOS and if it doesn't auto-detect as slave, manually change the settings and you'll be good. You shouldn't have to go into your BIOS.

If you can see it as slave in BIOS, but not in Windows that means the drive is not formatted properly and to do so, Right click on My Computer in Windows and goto Manage. It should load the Computer Management window. From there goto Disk Management under Storage in the left side browser. You should see the Hard Drive there, right click on that and format it.

That should do it.

HDD not recognized in XP Installation

if you are using it as a slave hard drive, you should be able to right click my computer, manage, then in next window double click storage, then disk management, then look for your drive, you can then look to see if its recognised, if not it will tell you that its not configured, and you should be able to right click on it and format it.
