White shadows and shuts off

When we turn the TV on it works for a minute then then white ghost like shadows flicker around the images and the TV shuts off.
Our TV began shutting off a couple of months ago.
The amount of time it would stay on became shorter.
When it shut off all three (timer, lamp, standby/temp) indicators flash.
Replaced the lamp and color wheel.

If it is the DMD board then it is probably not worth spending the $500 to replace it.
Especially if it, like the colorwheel, does not solve the problem.
    What do you think?

Check for short on 130Volt line. With the set unplugged clip the negative lead of your DMM to TP3 (Hot Gnd.) located on the Power Supply Panel. Connect the positive lead to TP7 (130 Volt source). Reading should be >100k. If a short is shown--and with test leads still connected--unplug P108. If still shorted, problem is on power supply panel. Check Q10, Q11 and D13. If unplugging P108 removes short, check for shorted Q10 and D14 on the deflection panel. Important!! Replacing either panel without following this procedure will short out the new panel installed. Often, both panels must be replaced at the same time to avoid one shorting out the other.

The shutting of prob may be due to the lamp door switch is too sensitive and so better to  put a pad on the bottom left corner of the door to push the switch down further.

If the video turns black and white and freezes before the TV turns OFF then is more likely the DMD board that is defective.

You should find more info on this link about the failure on your TV. I repaired a DLP with the same symptoms about 4 weeks ago that was behaving the same way as yours with video for about 1 minute and then the video froze white and black before shutting down with the 3 LEDs blinking on the front.

It is up to you to decide if you want to spent that much money or save it for a newer TV.

  • Jaime Hernandez Dec 03, 2008

If that was my TV and still does not work after installing a lamp and a color wheel to it, I will probably sell it to recoup some money.

3D image, ghost image, with shadows. how can I fix it?

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Do you have any speakers or magnets next to the tv? If so, that is not good.
It may be a convergance issue. Check to see if you have any adjustments on the back of your tv to adjust picture. If not, if may be a faulty capacitor that needs to be replaced

Color ghosting or shadows

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2

*White looking picture
*Halos around objects

Philips 55 inch hdtv rear projector

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I'm going to guess that these ghosts are of different colors too. This is most likely a convergence problem. Try resoldering the pins on the convergence ICs first. If that fails, replace them.
These ICs are large and black, attached to a heatsink. They will be marked STKxxx.
Keep us posted.

Akai PT5598HDI Rear Screen Projection TV With Blue Shadowing

If the ghosting is like a 3D effect its your convergence ICs , but if its like a blue Halo around objects that usually means your CRT coolant has congealed and will need replacement. The blue is the first tube to congeal for some reason, followed by green. Red seems to be not quite as prone to this. It is a normal occurrence n sets about 4 years old to need the coolant changed.
