Whan a unit goes into protect, it could be a bad speaker, shorted speaker wires. or the most common fault is a blown audio o/p ic in the unit. due to being compact units they are more difficult to work on than the full size unit. the part typically runs between $25.00 to $75.00 usd. if you are good with working on small places and are good with soldering give it a try. the ic will be on a heatsink. good luck.

Im having problems with my Sony MHC-GX9900, when i turn it on it it shuts down after a second or so, what can i do to fix it?

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

So when I turn on my sony MHC-GX8800 shelf system, it stays on for a few seconds and then turns off. The power button flashes red as well

I had a extremely similar problem with that model the only difference is that it used to turn off whenever I put the volume up. Anyway there was a peace of stranded wire behind the speakers terminal block connector, so be sure to check it out.

Protect power keeps coming on - rdx5 MHC

protect usually means a speaker wire problem. remove all connections and redo them making nice tight twists in the connections the spliced end should be no more than 1/4 inch long. make sure to do this for all speakers as well as on the back of the unit.

Additional Speakers

hello my frien let me tell you that the system wont accept more speakers or diferent loads per ohm if the total load says 16 ohms by channel thats the total can handle so if you ad more speakers the system turns off before it burns or or have a severe damage........saludos
