I see that you have a "z" light indicator on the system when powered ON but you see no video on the screen.
The "z" Indicator means that the system is turned ON and ready to use but is in standby mode.

All you need to do is restore the operating system. most of the IBM laptop has an inbuilt recovery option. just press the access IBM/ Thinkvantage (blue button) immediately after pressing the power button and follow the screen..
remove the battery and adapter. press power button for 30 sec. then connect the adapter. press power button. if this didnt work. you need to ask for an help of a local tech to check for the video card and cable.

Ok, I want this off my screen. If it is stuck in standby mode as you say, press and hold the power button until the computer goes "dead." Then turn it back on. If this doesn't work, unplug it and take the battery out for a while.
