Question about Toshiba SD-3980 DVD Player
Tapped and banged to no avail. Took the top off, saw the disc wasn't spinning, tried to spin it with my finger (like turning a page) and it started spinning and the readout displayed four dashes like normal and now works!
My son said, "thank you, my glorious mother!"

I tried the suggestion to tap the bottom of the DVD player... and that did work for us. Thanks for the solution.

I used the suggestions from post 1 and they are sending me a 2007 dvd player and I don't even have to pay shipping. This will at least get you a free replacement that works!

I have had identical problems to those noted above and to my utter amazement they have been solved by forcefully tapping the bottom of the player. It still sticks often so I guess I shall soon have to buy a new machine - not from Toshiba?

I tried tapping(gently, but with authority) the case where all the mechanical parts lie, ie the center. It didn't work right away. But then I found success tapping from the bottom of the case! As it turns out, this does not require taking the cover off.

You know what? about the same time frame as you posted this, dec 25th, this happened to me too. it won't play discs. just says bad on the player and the tv screen says incorrect disc. tried using a dvd player cleaner disc and it won't read that. i wonder if their players were set to a timer to not work anymore.

Hi Koji, My Toshiba DVD player does the same. It stops playing the disc, and the icon for incorrect disc displays. Often I cannot even start a movie. I keep getting BAD on the readout display also. I try hitting the player, or the stand in which the player is sitting, and sometimes it goes away and the movie plays. I will never buy Toshiba again.
