My DVD player Toshiba SD-3980, has worked well for the time I have had it. Until last week, when a friend came to visit from Spain. He had DVD's that he recording events while in Spain to show. I removed a disk I was watching, and we incerted his Disk. A message came on the TV screen indicating that the disk was incorrect. I removed the disk from Spain and replaced it with one of my own. Received the same incorrect disc message. The continued as I tried several disc of mine. Help

Tapped and banged to no avail. Took the top off, saw the disc wasn't spinning, tried to spin it with my finger (like turning a page) and it started spinning and the readout displayed four dashes like normal and now works!
My son said, "thank you, my glorious mother!"
Aww, shucks!

I used the suggestions from post 1 and they are sending me a 2007 dvd player and I don't even have to pay shipping. This will at least get you a free replacement that works!

I have had identical problems to those noted above and to my utter amazement they have been solved by forcefully tapping the bottom of the player. It still sticks often so I guess I shall soon have to buy a new machine - not from Toshiba?

I tried tapping(gently, but with authority) the case where all the mechanical parts lie, ie the center. It didn't work right away. But then I found success tapping from the bottom of the case! As it turns out, this does not require taking the cover off.

You know what? about the same time frame as you posted this, dec 25th, this happened to me too. it won't play discs. just says bad on the player and the tv screen says incorrect disc. tried using a dvd player cleaner disc and it won't read that. i wonder if their players were set to a timer to not work anymore.

Hi Koji, My Toshiba DVD player does the same. It stops playing the disc, and the icon for incorrect disc displays. Often I cannot even start a movie. I keep getting BAD on the readout display also. I try hitting the player, or the stand in which the player is sitting, and sometimes it goes away and the movie plays. I will never buy Toshiba again.

I have a Toshiba SD-3980 DVD player, how can i get a disc that is in the player (which no longer works)out?

If you don't care about the unit take out all the screws on the case until you can remove the whole top, you should be able to access the disk once you remove the case.

I own a Toshiba SD-3980SU2 DVD Video Player. I keep getting an Incorrect Disc comment, and bad comment. I an using DVD-RW discs. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the player.

You are probably using incorrect disc formats in this DVD player; try DVD+RW if you must use re-writables, or DVD-R (finalised in a recorder or burned on a PC). I doubt this model supports DVD-RW, so the problem wouldn't be with the player; it would be the formats of the discs you use.

Don't use DVD-RW discs in this player if it does not support that format.

Hi,
There is an recall from Toshiba for "bad" problem in Toshiba SD-3980 dvd player.

"Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. If the disk is not dirty, smudged up or scratched -- it is likely the laser pickup getting weak or the spindle motor not keeping at the right speed. If you have to clean the disc, wipe from the center out with a clean soft cloth.
