Same problem here. I have tried it on another PS2. Still does not work. Took it back to the store and was given a new one. Still does not work. It plays all of our other games. It has to be something with the disk format, but I don't know yet.

i bought guitar hero world tour for my son as a christmas gift. it won't work!!!! we've taken it back once and got another but same problem. need help!!!!!

  • rb89509 Dec 22, 2008

My son had the "old" large size PS-2, so we figured that was the problem. NOT! $129.00 later and a new "thin" PS-2 and this game still will not play. I think it's time for a class action suite for the expenses and mental anguish imposed on the public by RedOctane and Activision.

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2008

I have the same problme- newer PS2 and Guitar Hero will not play- sucks- what to doo

  • ladybug76 Dec 26, 2008

I'm with you guys, Our kids asked for this game for months, got it for Christmas and was so excited to play, only to be disappointed by the "no data" reading after inserting the disc. My son's ps2 is about 3 years old, tried it in his first; my daughter got a new ps2 this Christmas (new guitar hero disc and new ps2)-same message on both consoles. What can we do about this, sounds like this company is making a lot of money off selling this system with botched discs not to mention the folks who go out and buy a second disc only to find that it too, doesn't work. Mad as H-LL!!

  • impy2101 Dec 26, 2008

I bought the Guitar Hero World Tour with guitar in a sealed box. I also bought 3 more Guitar Hero games bundled (without guitar). The guitar works. The 3 other games work. The World Tour game is not readable by my system.

Check out Yahoo Answers and Answerbag along with gamespot...much the same complaints everywhere!

  • Teresa_rudol Dec 26, 2008

I am having the same problem. Our ps2 will not recognize the guitar that game in the box. I am so frustrated!

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2008

My PS2 Slimline reads CD's and other games but won't even spin for guitar hero world tour... confusing... I'm not sure what the problem is.

  • elevations1 Dec 26, 2008

have an old fat ps2 exactly the same problem really angry tried all the suggestions and nothing

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2008

We had the same problem with my son's Christmas present. When I called the customer service number for Sony, the first person told me my son's console (75,001 series) needed an upgrade to read the multi-layered disc for World Tour. He wanted me to send in my son's console and they would upgrade or "exchange" with a console that had been upgraded already for a $45.00 fee. I told them my son did not want to be without his system during the Christmas break from school. I asked them to send the upgraded system first and I would send my son's back so he wouldn't have to be without his system, but they refused to do that. I asked to speak to someone higher up. When "Andrew" got on thephone, he informed me that I was misinformed and that it was a service problem with my son's console, that wear and tear and caused it not to be able to read the multi-layered disc. I wasn't buying his new terminology for a mistake that Sony and game makers had made. I know that our son's console is compatible to read the multi-layered disc and that Sony is trying to cover their behinds by saying it's a service problem. I'm waiting for a callback from someone higher up. Sounds like Sony set themselves up for a class action suit!!!

PS obviously made a shitty game and has pissed a lot of people off not to mentioned disappointed many, many kids. Way to go PS ... hope you are happy that you crapped on everyone's Christmas.

  • Teresa Sookdeo Dec 26, 2008

try cleaning the lens with rubbing alcohol. Just a dab will do with a Q-tip. That worked for us. Except, now we can't get one of the guitars to work and its brand new :(

  • tbehel Dec 27, 2008

I am having the exact same problem as everyone else. When I put guitar hero world tour in my system, it just says disk read error. I'm going to try cleaning the  lens and see what happens.

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2008

i,m  a 58 yr rocker, expert at medium. i cleaned the lens to get the world tour to load. it takes over 2 min. to load anything from this program. better than the 6 min. initially. this is like DIAL-UP. SONY or somebody has a real delema on their hands here. i see massive recalls or lawsuits in the near future. i,ll bet there are a whole lot of unhappy people across the world about now. this PS-2 GAME IS A BUST. VERY DISSAPOINTED IN SONY FOR LETTING THIS HAPPEN, they had to have known.

  • tntgantt Dec 27, 2008

Thanks for ruining another kid's Christmas! Imagine how we (the parents) feel when we purchased something that was labeled as being for a PS2 & no matter what we do, it will not work. Again,
thanks for ruining our kid's Christmas--would not wish this on anyone.

I was really mad when i put the cd in the PS2 and it said DISC READ ERROR so I read some solutions and i was thinking how in the He** do u friggin clean it with the bigger and faster ps2 also 1 day i was reading the comments about the game on ps2 and well u have to have for the skinnier ps2 and i thought mann thats pretty stupid

  • crankyc Dec 28, 2008

Christmas Day!- World tour doesn't work on sons PS2 but works on next door neighbors PS2 and nephews PS2 (although freezes occassionaly)- sure as sh#t Sony new about it!

  • superblah156 Dec 29, 2008

yeah i got world tour for christmas and it won't play on mine!

me and my brothers and sisters are pissed. we already tried cleaning the insides of the console and it STILL didn't work. >:(

we have the "SCPH-75001 " or what ever its called. the slim one.

is there any way to fix this other than buying a new ps2?

  • upsetparents Dec 29, 2008

I felt like an idiot - purchased Guitar Hero World Tour for son for xmas.....it didn't work. Took it back and replaced it ..... still didn't work. (We have the fat one - but did try them on neighbors slim one --- nothing.) So we decided to get Rock Band. After waiting in line for 45 mins to purchase this on 12/26.....took it home.....it didn't work either. All of the other games we own work just fine...no problems! We tried cleaning the lens and all too! Well when I took Rock Band back to the store....the guy tried to tell me that my unit was going bad and that I should replace it so that my children can play the games that they want. What a bunch of crock! We are a family of 6 and with the one of us laid off, one in college times a tough. I work for a advertising company and we deal with DVD9's all the time - you are limited on what they can be played on if not done a certain way. I think that Sony knew about this and didn't bother to research this further. I am so tired of having to be pushed into replacing the units during these trying economic times.

  • sheila-m2004 Dec 29, 2008

We had the same problem with GH World Tour for PS2. I tried changing the settings and turning on the diagnostics neither worked. Finally, I took the PS2 apart - it's an older 50001 fat one- blew out the dust and cleaned the lens with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, dried it with a clean dry q-tip and it works!!

  • atopiels Dec 30, 2008

Same problem... opened on x-mas and Guitar World Tour won't work... all other games work on my psII, including legends of Rock. Since World Tour did not work, we bought legends to see what would happen. If we had not, our kids xmas would have been ruined not being able to play with his new controller.
Spent hours on the phone with Activision, and Red-Octane, and was given the run-around.. Neither company would take responsibility to even allow me to return the disk with RMA #. Then they suggested it was a Sony disk problem, which the sony tech support guy denies. They also blamed it on the dual layer disk not being read by the Playstation.
The companies obviously knew that the dual layer disk would be a problem, but decided to send it out to market during x-mas time to reap their profits. Shameless greed... and no regard to how an 8 yr. old boys x-mas can be ruined. We're unemployed right now and this was our main gift to our kid.. Thanks folks at Sony playstation, Activision, and Red Octane!

  • kathavlu Dec 31, 2008

same thing here, got it for christmas went to rock, and nothing. exchanged it a couple days later when the stores finally restocked, and nothing. i will not send in 45.00 plus tax for an upgrade on a system that plays EVERY other game i own except this one. the problem is not the system, its the game, and i think they can afford to send me my money back or send me the right format for my ps2, this is false advertisement to say for ps2, not certain models of ps2

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2009

We brought Rock band for our ps2 and it said their is no data on disk so we replaced it and it said the same thing. This is a bunch of bull why didn't they tell us. They wasted by time.

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2009

Sony knew about it and I am having the same issue only with Rock Band on my PS2. Mine is a slimline SCPH-70012. Amazon was great and immediately sent us a second one when our first one wasn't working. When the second one wouldn't work I called EA the makers of Rock Band and they told me it was an issue with Sony. So I called Sony and because I have owned my play station loyaly and bought close to 30 games for it I was rewarded with being laft at and told I was being unrealistic because I was beyond my pathetic one year warranty and I wanted them to fix their problem and I didn't want to pay $45 + tax plus shipping to do it either.

Sony will pay for this there are too many complaints popping up all over the internet with tis problem and they are ingnoring the outcry of their once loyal customers. I will never own another Sony product and I will be discouraging anyone I know from it as well. I may contact the media about this. Good luck to everyone.

  • blonderinxo Jan 07, 2009

i have the same problem.. i bought the game at game stop and i put it in.. it acted like it was going to work.. but then it went to the loading screen, and the bar got all the way full and stopped and never did anything else. i tried a bunch of times, always froze at the same screen.. so i took it back and got a new one, and that one doesnt work at ALL, it wont even read the disc. so i am going to take it back and get my money back. they shouldnt sell a game that doesnt work. its b.s...

every single one of my other games work just fine so i know its not my system.

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2009

    i hate PS2!
i tried everything and nothing seems to work.
I think i should have bought the XBOX guitar hero!

To all you guys having this problem with PS2 - I bought World Tour for my brother and put it in this morning. It worked the 1st time we put it on, but we restarted the game because both guitars weren't connected, and it would NOT work after that (we have an old fat PS2 by the way). After reading online, I found out this disc is a Dual Layered DVD, and can cause problems reading it

Here's what I did to fix it - I took out all 8 screws on the bottom of the PS2, popped the case off, and then took out the 2 tiny screws for the DVD drive. After taking that case off, you can see the laser lens. All I did was clean it with an alcohol-soaked Q-tip, then buffed it clean, and after turning the game back on - it works fine! We're so pumped over here, and to anyone else having the problem, I bet this will fix it! Good luck!

To reddawn, how could you clearly see the lens eye thru the tiny slot? I didn't wanna just stick a Q-tip w/ alcohol in there. Not enough maneuverability IMO. I was able to do a more thorough job, and clean all the dust on the inside of it.

Plus the vibration isn't working on the controllers either, and I have to solder 1 of the fuses - so I was gonna be opening it up anyways soon.

It is good that you were able to figure it out as well, because I read so much bad info online about ppl having this problem. Horror stores about ppl going back and exchanging the whole thing multiple times and still not having it work [obviously cuz the lens is dirty] - and even someone else who went out and bough a Slim PS2 which STILL didn't work for them apparently.

I had the same problem with my ps2 for the game. When the menu comes up with the options of browser or system configeration press the triangle button then there will be a menu that has information about your version of ps2 at the top it will say console go up to that and as you scroll onto it it should turn blue then press the triangle button again and it will give a yes or no option to turn diagnosis on or off. If it is off turn it on and reinsert game. This did the trick for mine. Good luck everyone!

We couldn't get it to work either until I cleaned the eye with alcohol on a qtip. you DO NOT need to take the PS2 apart to do this!!! Just open the lid and rub the eye gently and let it dry for a sec and it works!

I had the same problem with my sons "fat" PS2, I got him NSF-UNDERCOVER for Christmas and it wouldn't play right either. I found by removing the square covers on the bottom ( 4 are rubber pads ) I was able to remove the screws to expose the inside, I then needed to vacum the dust out of it, needed eye-glass screwdriver to remove the cover over the lens (after removing screws sheild needs to be shifted and pried gently to expose lens) cleaned the rubber drive wheel and lens with a cleaning solution and it works fine now even with GUITAR HERO.

I had the "big" PS2 and bought a used "big" PS2 and now the game works fine. After 5 years and constant use, maybe it was starting to go. First sign was it stopped playing DVDs, then the new world tour guitar hero. Btw, the used PS2 was $59.

Okay, this may sound ridiculous, but I was having the same problem. I simply wiped the disc off with a swiffer cloth and I was able to play!!!

Again, it worked for me so I thought I'd throw it out there! GOOD LUCK!!!

"PlayStation®2 (MODEL SCPH-75001) SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY ALERT A limited number of PlayStation® or PlayStation®2 format software titles may perform differently on the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system model number SCPH-75001 than they do on previous PlayStation®2 or PlayStation® consoles, or may not perform properly on the SCPH-75001 model. Following is a list of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software titles that SCEA is aware of that may fall in this category."

***I have the same problem, and discovered this post on the Playstation web site under 'consumer alerts'. there is a link there for a list of games that fall under this category. Guitar hero is not on the list but I expect it will be. I have the model number mentioned above. Good luck finding a solution. Honestly I don't think there is one...yet.

SOURCE: Guitar Hero World Tour PS2

If you have old ps2(fat one) or some of the older slim models they are unable to read the new dual layer discs like GHWT. You can send your ps2 back to sony to reformat it to be able to read these new discs for about $50. There is currently a class action lawsuit against sony and activision for not being upfront about this problem.
