Whooshing noise from behind water filter in Amana ARB 9059CS

Our refrigerator/freezer makes a low, two second, whooshing sound of water coming in at the intake water line behind the filter in the top of the refrigerator. We used to hear this sound about once every two hours. Now it happens about once every 2 minutes. There are no leaks and no problems with the water dispenser or ice machine. What could be causing this?

There are 2 possible problems. One is the defrost cycle is not working properly this is usually indicated by a large amount of frost on the back freezer panel. If so, the circuit will have to be repaired and the evaperator thawed to remove the ice build up. The other is the fresh food damper is not working properly this is behind the "lump" in the back of the fridge compartment above the top shelf, remove the louver panel to see if it is open or closed. closed will be warm open should be cold. The water dispenser reservoir is probably frozen due to poor air circulation.

This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
Take a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

yes you could be hearing the freon running thru the sealed system. it might be normal, and also you could be hearing the unit going thru a defrost cycle. either way its not likely a problem. just keep an eye out for food getting warm. ice cream, breads and juices need to be at zero degrees to be solid. meats can still be rock hard at 20 degrees. if your unit is not cooling then you will find those items getting warm first. make sure the door is closing properly before you call for service!

Not freezing wont get down to temparature, stuff has defrosted, makes whooshing noise when dooor opended and light flashes. Its googsed Whirlpool ARC4030UK

If there is whooshing noise, check first the damper fan. See if the fan is broken or if fan duct is obstructed. Check the fan in the evaporator system (defrost system) behind the fridge's firewall.

The problem is commonly the defrost system. Fan or thermostat do not work. As result the coils freeze up. With coils frozen the condenser will go under stress and will loose efficiency. The effect is the system not producing enough cold.

The defrost system comprises defrost thermostat, heater, defrost control and fan. The parts that fail more commonly are thermostat and heater. Both parts are located behind freezer firewall and tested reading impedance with a multimeter. Element and thermostat are faulty if they return Ohms infinity (the circuit is open) when reading impedance with a multimeter at the part's contact.

If thermostat and element are OK, the next part to be tested is the fan. Fan can be tested by simply checking that the motor is running when energized.

Here a tip explaining how to deal with defrost problems on a different fridge model: Fridge not cooling. Procedure is similar with your model.

If defrost system is not the culprit, check if the compressor is starting and working properly. If compressor is not starting properly replace the relay and capacitor kit connected to the compressor motor. Compressor motor has long warranty. If the motor itself is defective call the manufacturer to check warranty terms.

If compressor motor and starter kit are OK, defrost system is OK (including defrost control) it can be a refrigerant leak resulting in low gas pressure in lines. In that case the compressor motor will stay on most of the time.

The most common faults resulting in no heat are due to defrost system problems or to defective compressor motor starter kit.

My Samsung refrigerator makes a funny whooshing sound.

Try removing the ice tray and look for cubes jammed between the ice maker and the wall. After I cleared them out the whooshing stopped immediately.

Amana Refrigerator Model # ARB 2214 CC with leaking ice maker

Good day,
If the fill pipe that fills the ice maker is in it's proper position, then it is a defective water fill valve located in the bottom rear of the machine.
After harvesting the cubes the ice maker mechanism continues to rotate and turns the water valve on for 7 seconds. If it does not shut off smartly then it can cause the well to overfill, and flow water into the bucket.
Do not let this go. A small leak could turn into a major overflow, even overnight causing serious problems to the machine and as I have seen the entire house.

Sub Zero Freezer Vacuum

If your freezer temps are ok, it may just be that your gasket is getting older and it becomes more porus as it ages. The vacume sound doesnt really mean alot except that the difference in the room temp and the cold of the freezer create this vacume.
