Final Fantasy 11 Online (360) - Unreadable Disc

Having problems trying to install Final Fantasy 11 online on the xbox 360. Every time I try to boot up the cd rom it keeps on saying unreadable disc or to contact xbox.com/support. I can't understand why the cd rom won't boot up as the cd is brand new and the second disc that was exchanged for because I encountered the same predicament with the first disc. Tried to take back the second disc but the shop checked it out and it was working fine according, so I can't understand why it won't work on my xbox 360.
Plus they refused to give me a refund or an exchanged, they then told me there was a free number for me to contact to resolve the problems I am having and they got that wrong as their is no free number
Also checked to see if the other games and dvd's etc.. were working and they are perfectly fine. I don't think there's a problem with the xbox 360 its only just over a month old and was bought brand new.
Tried ringing the support for final fantasy 11 online but low and behold there's no one there until monday now !!
This is so annoying I have had this game now for three days and still can't play it GReeeeeeeeewwwwwwww...........
If you can help me with this predicament hopefuly as its driving me up the wall !!!
Much Appreciated

same fugging bullcrap as me dude and i cant find any way to fix this whats worse i installed it and played it for 5 mins then was tired since install was 5 hours then later i went to play same **** got second disc and wont play....im so sad im missing out on all these free days they better reimberse me those douches at microsoft or im gonna tell all my customers why they should not get xb360.... selling +10 xb360"s will go down to 0 and ill have people return them >.>

  • billychaos Dec 02, 2008

I am seeing the same thing. I installed the play online viewer then installed the game. When I loaded up the game it began to download the updates for final fantasy. During the download I lost network connection. I selected 'retry' to attempt to reconnect. That's when I got the Unreadable Disc error.

What really ticks me off es the game doesnt even show up in my games list in the xbox memory list yet it shows i only have 1.6 free space on my xbox hard drive! Before I installed the game i had 9.8ish free space. It seems like it created phantom files that the system thinks are there and they are not. I was on the phone talking to xbox for 3 hours till they finally told me to reformat the hard drive or buy a new hard drive. I think this issue may be related to both square and the new xbox update. Remember the new xbox experience update allows you to install any game on the drive. I belive this may be conflicting with squares installation.

When i start mine up it says: "The game could not start. Please download the game again.

For more help, go to blah blah blah."

What the heck is the matter with my console NOW!? if you or anyone else has figured out what to do, please let me know. i would download it onto my console and try to play from that, but it needs 6.7GB and i have less than 1.5. I just don't have any to spare.

I have the same problem. I had bought my FFXI yesterday and it came up with the message. error message. I was annoyed and turned it off. I went to return the game and the guy gave me another disk to try. I came home today and it gave me the same message. I'm going to go insane. I've had my 360 for 2 months and I have never had a problem with it.

I'm pretty sure that there's some corruption in the files that the playonline application has to access. The solution would to be to uninstall and then reinstall playonline and FFXI (another fun five hours). The problem with that is that if you go to your memory settings in the xbox menu, the files for playonline and FFXI are nowhere to be found.

That's as much as I can figure out.

I think it might be that I didn't do the whole log out thing, and just powered down my xbox. It must not have liked that.

Im having the same issue.. my ffxi disc was working fine 2 minutes later I changed profiles went to play ffxi then got that same damn error... So.. Im trying to re-install now. Its really BS and I am highly wishing I didnt get an xbox360. I never had any issues with ffxi/ps2. Retarded..

    Same dumb problem here

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2009

Having exact same problem here as well. I shut it down one time instead of logging out, and can no longer start the disc. Exact same disc works on all other Xbox 360's, and I can't get in memory settings to delete data and reinstall

  • emendez41487 Mar 16, 2009

I have the same problem but Idk how to download the software on the disk into the HDD, I believed I did that before but the HDD doesnt show it so I cant play Straight from the HDD. ONLY when I put in the disk.

  • Anonymous Mar 27, 2009

Same thing. To make matters worse, u need 6.7 gb of space to reinstall it after it corrupts. Your screwed if u only hav a 20 GB hard drive. You also cant uninstall FF11 becuz it doesnt show in the memory.

  • luke_wyckoff Apr 04, 2009

I have the problem still. I cant understand the Solutions you say though.I already installed the game, got to lv 5, and when i shut it off, i wanted to play again the next day. So i turn it on and it cant read the disc x.x. So we bought another and it didnt work. x.x So we bough ANOTHER and IT didnt work. Yes i now have 3 FFXI cd's... Im actually new to xbow... so if i can get like an all out explanation.. It would be really appreciated.. D=

Sfabian answered the solution: If you are having trouble with your online disc and it is saying disc is unreadable, just follow theses directions:

Step 1: Put the disc on the disc tray, but do not close the disc tray.

Step 2: Connect a mp3 player, or a cell phone through a usb cord and listen to the music.

Step 3: close the tray but let the music play and then the game will load and don't reinstall anything, just select the first option.

This solution was fixed on final fantasy XI ultimate colletion.

I swear the ipod trick works. i don't have an ipod but i have a sanza fuze. i plugged it into the xbox and started playing music through the music library menu. once the music started playing i opened and closed the cd tray with the button on the console. i then pressed the xbox button on my controller and chose to start playonline viewer. it,k as everyone knows, will tell you that it did not shut down properly but as soon as i chose to start playonline viewer again it started up right away with no other issues

the ipod trick DOES work. i don't have an ipod so i plugged my sandisk sanza in and started playing whatever music started first through the music library menu. after the music started i opened and closed the cd tray using the button on the xbox console. i then hit the xbox button on my controller and chose to start playonline view. of course i got the message about playonline viewer not being shut down properly but once i chose to start playonline viewer again from the game menu it started with no problems. my problem came from a power outage i had while playing the game so i'm just glad it didn't fry anything

Whoever said replace the xbox, stop giving advice. before you do ANYTHING try the ipod trick. play music with ipod while ff11 is in the feed tray, then open, close, and let it load. I couldn't believe it worked. I'm sure the turning off and on trick works, and erasing all your ****, but the ipod worked after two seconds of work. i was so relieved cause my story is just like all yalls, three days of cleaning the disk, buying new copies, dismantling and checking the laser. do try the ipod trick and let the song play for about 30 seconds just to be formal. thanks to all posters, the problem really bummed me out.

Ok, so i had this same problem just last night, and i found a fix that works. what has happened is sometimes when you don't actually choose the exit playonline viewer at the main menu it can cause some corrupted data. if you insert the disc and at the NXE dashboard choose to install it to the hard drive (may take 20 or more minutes) then choose to play from hard drive problem is solved. when you start up POL it'll tell you that some of the data was corrupted but it'll work fine after that. hope this helps everyone.

Just plug a flash drive on your system or any MP3 player and play music for like 30 seconds and activate the game as usual, it worked for me.

OK I figured this one out. Turns out POL has it's own "Close Program" function. If you use the XBOX 360's close function to shut down POL the data on your hard drive will corrupt and will give you an unreadable disk error.

What you need to do is copy the FFXI disk completely onto the XBOX hard drive, and run from the hard drive. This will give you access to POL which will give you the option to reinstall the POL application if need be to get the game running again.

So once it's running just remember to never shut it down using the "XBOX" button ever again... it's dumb I know, but what are ya gonna do?

There's an easy way to fix this, just clear your hard drive's cache by going to System Preferences, Memory, scroll to Hard Drive and press Y not A, and press Clear System Cache.
This will actually remove all traces of Final Fantasy XI on your Xbox Hard Drive, so you'll have to reinstall it all.

Heh I used something similar to the ipod trick. Simply started playing music from my computer (bridged wireless connection through my laptop) after reading this thread and after thinking it wouldnt work I decided to let about 3 or 4 songs play through while I played along on my guitar and then when i got bored with that I tried to start the disk up and hey whaddya know it actually worked!

Had this problem, but no ipod, but i did find another fix. When game is trying to load, open the disc tray with the button on the console, after that my xbox thought the game disc was a dvd. Shut off the xbox via controller button then start the console with the controller button. Started the game as normal and it read it. hope this helps the non-ipod owning gamers out there.

Alright like the man said before hand , if your getting this Error ONLY for Final Fantasy XI, means you were Lazy, just like I was and decided to say "Screw it" (Cuts Xbox Off) well now you have the Error cause you did not exit out the screen, PLEASE!!! Turn it back on, Ignore your previous attempts, and just Turn FF XI on, if you have the ultimate Collection, sorry guys, you CANNOT install to Hard Drive from Menu. So, as It's trying to load, Cut the Xbox off, yes, we know this is what started the problem in the first place, but it also fix's it, you can do it via Controller than cut it back on, load up Final, and It should pop up a message some data MAY! be corrupt, not is, MAY, if your lucky, you can load up everything just fine and it'll work, just make sure you exit through veiwer, it beats the heck out of reinstalling it again forever. ;)

Well I talked to squar enix and apparently the new ffxi ultimate collectors edition has glitches with the current dashboard edition for the xbox360.

I am currently running it off my xbox 360 fine but at the start i had the same problem.

the reason for this is simple, the game must be shut down properly. you can't just directly goto the dashboard while you are logged on the game at all!.

meaning you must use the "shut down" feature on the main menu above log out. If you don't you will have to reformat ur HDD and reinstall the entire game. yes big pain in the *** I know.

also the game tends to take a while to shutdown and load up sometime, just let it do it's thing it will eventually shut down and load up.

Also as far as I know they are working on fixing this problem, i hope this helped :) happy gaming

@ffxi players caitsith server name ripcurl ^^

OK i had this problem, and i tried all of the solutions listed here, except for replacing the xbox, and reformatting the hard drive (too much saved gameplay on that beezy to throw away). i was discouraged, but determined to find a fix. i started doing a combination of the above fixes and found one that worked for me, a combo of the ipod trick/shutting off the console while the game is trying to load/and clearing the system cache on the hard drive.

Here is how i did it,

1. go to your system settings tab on your dashboard, select your hard drive, and press Y, NOT A to bring up a menu, then select clear system cache or something like that, and it will "maintenance" your hard drive.

2. Plug an ipod or zune of some sort of mp3 player into the xbox and go to your music tab on your dashboard, start playing music from the portable mp3 device.

3. Once the music is playing, try to start the game, once the screen goes black and it's trying to load, use the xbox button on the controller to shut off the xbox BEFORE you get the error message telling you to go to xbox.com/support

4. turn the xbox back on with the button on the controller, and once it starts up press the xbox button again to bring up a menu and within the first tab at the bottom there will be an option to start play online viewer. select that from there.

5. cross your fingers and hope it works, it worked for me twice, the first time it worked it said that you have to exit the viewer before shutting off or you get corrupted data. it brings up the installation menu where you can chosse to play the online viewer, install it, or uninstall it. i say it worked for me twice because the first time i just selected to play the online viewer from here and it just went back to the same old error screen, the second time i ran through these exact steps it worked again, and i chose to uninstall it. after the uninstall you can play the online viewer from the xbox dash board without going through any of this **** again. the downside is you must now re install it. . . and as we know that takes a few hours :(

but if this solution or any of the others above worked for you then it will be a lesson that we have to exit the playonline viewer before shutting off the xbox.

good luck!

OK, The Solution was really simple for me, I have had the game for like 3 weeks. Tried returning it and all. OFC I thought, this sux, now im out my money and cant even play the game. Well it was as easy as putting a mp3 song on a flash drive, played the song for maybe 15 secs. While it was playing I closed my tray vai controller, and bingo. I was amazed. Thanks to all those who gave reasonable and good answers.

Ok i think i may have stumbled accross a fix. do hold me to this but the other day i shutdown ffxi but the xbox froze and i had to turn it off at the mains. so i thought to myself oh hell no im not going through another 6hrs of downloads so rung round some mates to see if they were free for me to do the two 360 trick. managed to arrange with a mate to do this but i was messing around on xbox marketplace trying to dl some demos when i decided to play my ipod through my 360. i was listening to 2001 dr dre(what a class album i must add) and was looking through the memory settings but when i came out of the option i pressed the eject disc option by accident and then selected the close disc tab. i listened to the xbox warm up twice and on the third attempt prepared for dissappoitment and anger but to my suprise the message came up explaining playonline was not shut down properly and that this can cause corrupt data so i clicked start playonline and heypresto it worked. this is the first time i tried it whilst listening to my ipod and i dont want to try it again just incase it doesnt work but if anyone has this problem i suggest trying this, whats the worst that can happen.

There are alot of solutions out there for this problem right now ( hmmmm.... sounds like microsoft should take there heads outta their... *ahem, and get problems like this fixed) the only reason that I am having this problem is because i had an extended warrenty on a Gamestop 360 console and that broke so i decided that ill get another since i have the warrenty, so i got it no problems! untill about 3 weeks later... (all red ringed) i decided that, that was enough **** from microsoft and tried to just turn in the busted @$$ console and get some store credit for the PS3 i just bought ( PS3, you are the savior of the 360 slaves!) when i get up to the counter and return the console, an employe asks me, "so you just need another one then?" i reply, "naw, ill just get store credit or my money back." He then tells me that i can only get the same item that i had the warrenty on. well that sucks but i do have some cool games for the 360 (such a dissapointment...) i decided to try FFXI. at first, after the horrible download time, i was having a great time! it was getting late so i decided to wrap it up, so i turned my 360 off just the same as any other game. After work the next day i go to play it and there is a disk read error. So i said to myself, "Self you have another broken 360" so, for the hell of it, i decide that i was going to try another game for the console. worked just fine... hmmm... i decide that its time to do some research on the good ol' internet. come to find out, many people are being plauged by this problem as well, and that, you guessed it, it was microsoft's FAULT AGAIN!!!! (not suprized are ya?)

after reading some of the ways to "fix" this issue, i found a few tips that said that installing the game onto the HDD will cure this cancer. so i give it a shot and get another error messege saying that installation of this game is not supported. well ****. the only other option is to reformat, "wipe" your drive and lose all you saved game to include Fallout 3 and Fable II.... i decide to look for myself. after looking at the reformat button for about 3 mins and thinking that its not worth it to erase hours of saved games, i decide to give up on FFXI. just as i was backing out of the option and going back to the dashboard, i looked and saw an option that says something like, "matiainace" hell why not. i click it and Voila ( pronouced Wall-Ah lol) the corrupted data was gone and i could reinstall the game!!!! DONT REFORMAT YOUR DRIVE!!! YOU CAN FIX IT!!!!

If data on hard drive has been corrupted but you cannot delete it because you can't find it on the hard drive, then i think the last resort is to reformat the hard drive and then just recover the gamertag and try it out again.

I think i figured out a way. With the new Dashboard update you can transfer files to a USB drive. Well if you go under transfer data there is section that says "Publisher Data". That contains the FFXI data!

So just move that onto a flash drive, and remove the flash drive. next time boot ffxi it shouldn't be on the hard drive.

I don't play ffXI anymore and wanted desperately to delete it but of course play-online was refusing to start so i couldn't. I used the method of using the xbox guide button to turn the console off as the disc begins to run up ( before the error message gets a chance to appear) . after about 20 attempts it worked. play-online finally started and said the data was corrupt. i selected delete software and it removed final fantasy. i now have 6.5 GB of space back :) i couldn't use the hard drive install method as my final fantasy is the 2008 version. thanks so much to everyone who has taken the time to post solutions here.

Ok I found a solution to the "Shut down error" you have to play off the rise of zilart disc, it's the only disc that will work after this. Once you put the disc back in and boot it up once it will allow the ToAU or WOG or the collection disc to reboot. The only problem is ..... who still has the original RoZ disc? I was lucky to find ONE copy at Gamestop. Hope this helps

IT doesn't make any sense but Here it is you HAVE to exit by logging out not shutting down and then back out to online player and log out of each window until your back at your dash board.....I know I know it sucks.
when you have the error you can fix it by : go to your music start anything open and close the tray and start it up you will get a error just re install it and log out right .... like I said you don't need a MP3 or a Ipdo just start your music from your hard drive so your hard drives busy and doesn't see what your doing apparently like I say IT DONT make NO sense! but it works hahahhahah

Everyone is overlooking a solution again, you all get wound up in your complexities that you do not catch the simple answers.
Look at Solution #3.

Put CD in disc tray.
Close tray with the console eject button.
While it says it is reading: Open tray with console eject button.

Close the tray again...

Works on more games, consols, & pc's than you know.

OMG! if this is not the greatest fix to a game bug ever. After reading the solutions I was hesitant to try but finally barked off some orders to my brother who had been trying for about 3 hours to get the game to work.

First I told him to clear his cache. Then after trying to play music through his cell phone ( no ipod) he just played some Brittney Spears directly from the Xbox and trues bob the game ran and we are now playing.

To who ever figured this out, I bow in owe of your supreme genius. I think you sir!

I am currently having this problem with the FFXI disc not reading. after downloading its content 2 times, i finally switched over to the "MP3" scenerio. it's a quick fix, BUT it is not a wise action to take. if you have ever downloaded an online xbox360 game to your xbox360 HDD, you know that to run the game you must have the disc in the disc tray. after the initial boot-up of the disc being read. it stops. letting you play your game to its fullest extent and it does not ruin your disc from constantly running. so the problem with the "MP3" idea is that your disc will constantly run. Not good my friends. so, i am still FFXI-less until i call SE on monday to find out exactly what they want me to do. equally as frustrated as the rest of you. i hope my info helps.

After switching games out from different Gamestop locations, I came to this website as a last ditch effort before tossing my 3rd ff disc out the window and wanted to announce that turning the xbox off while its trying to read the disc using the xbox controller WORKED FOR ME. and I'm currently playing. no reinstalling. no hassle. that is all.

I had the same problem as everyone else and the best solution we found was to reformate the hard drive and just recover the gamer tag. Once the hard drive is reformated and the gamer tag recovered you simply start all over. Which sucks if you have a lot of other stuff already on your hard drive that you want to save. The important thing to remember is that never turn off the ffxi game via the xbox console because it WILL corrupt the data on the hard drive. You must log out via the PLAYONLINE VEIWER only. If you think you can download it to the hard drive think again if it is the Vana'diel Collection 2008. This disk will NOT allow you to download it to the hard drive for some reason. This is the disk causing many of the problems and neither Microsoft or Square Enix will fix either problem. This disk holds all expansions plus the original game. If you can find the Maintanance option on the xbox anywhere that works too, but we could never find it.

The only fix right now is to have a bigger hard drive than the 20gb drive, and install the entire FF game using the NXE instal disc to hard drive feature. Then the game runs fine directly off the hard drive.

I was playing FinalFantasy 11 and suddenly my xbox360 froze up so I had to shut down without logging out of the game properly. When I tried to log in it now says that all of my Final Fantasy 11 disks are...

This is a problem occurring in all the xbox 360 consoles....... this is mainly because of the poor quality of the disc.....as a result it leads to the damage of ur xbox lens..............use good original discs........the heating effect is due to the long usage of pirated discs ...
check your lens if its working good then better download this Repair Guide for further information ......... all the best.......

Need to delete Final Fantasy XI fom Xbox 360 and can't find the files for it. I think they're hidden. Anyone know how to find hidden files on the Xbox 360?

You cannot access hidden files on your xbox 360. What you do is go to MY XBOX > GAME LIBRARY> COLLECTIONS> ALL GAMES> FINAL FANTASY XI> DELETE. Doing this will delete all the game files for Final Fantasy XI.

Why cant i get back on final fantasy

It sounds like the DRM was married to your old motherboard. It would be the same reason that you can't play LIVE arcade games without being signed to XBOX LIVE. To fix it you need to have your XBOX 360 online and a computer that is also logged into the internet. Then go to http://www.xbox.com/drm and it will walk you through the rest of the process. It will take less than 5 minutes.

Although I cant find it anywhere I believe I read that those servers were going to be shut down. I never got into that game because I just couldn't justify another monthly subscription. I miss the good old days of Free online multiplayer. But I am a Gaming Dinosaur.

Unreadable FIFA 2008 dISC

sounds like your dvd drive is having issues. try to do a online update. that may fix the non reading disc issue. as for it damaging that cd and only that cd i would just buy a new dvd drive. most of the time when a cd comes out damaged its due to a belt spindle. which is the part that spins your disc, but your saying its only doing it to 1 game. try a update if that dont work purchase a new dvd drive. make sure u get the correct one
