Hello caliandrew88,
Having a full D Drive will not cause Vista to crash. If you need to free up space then get an external hard drive to move files off of your machine.

Switched a vista hd to a xp hd and windows will not open

You can't do that, it just won't work. A hard drive with XP installed on it will be unrecognizable to a PC with vista already installed on it. You can either backup your XP drive by putting it into a compatible XP computer. Or you can buy on of these, which are handy. This let's you get the data to your new PC thru a USB connection.

I have a Dell Dimension E520. The DVD burners light is solid green light and wont open. Computer is not detecting this drive

-To open the drive you need to get a pin and insert it to the pin hole. About the drive is not being detected I will assume that it was not shown on My computer/Computer. What you need to do is Start > Run > Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318; look for the upper filter on the right side as well as lower filter. If you can find any of those then you can chose to delete it. After you deleted the upper and lower filters restart the comptuer and check if the DVD drive is listed under My Computer/Computer.

Clean old files out of a computer

go to "my computer" and click on the drive (usually "C") and click on explore. the drive storage files will open so that you can choose which ones you want to delete. You can delete one file at a time or hold down the CNTRL Key and keep selecting files but don't try to do too many at once, maybe 10 or 15 at a time, just hit the delete key and they will be gone, realize that once they are gone they are actually in the recycle bin and can be recovered. You will not get your space back until you actually go into the recycle bin and delete the files that are there but once you do this, its final and your files are gone forever (well not exactly, but it would be difficult to get them back).
if you have a drive besides the "C" drive that you want to deltet files on, you can go to the drive and choose "select all files" and then hit the delete key, these will go to into the recycle bin as well and you'll have to detlet them there too to actually recover all your space. Be advised that some files are so large that when you hit the delete key the file won't go to the recycle bin but a diaglog box will open asking you if you want to delete the file.

The CD/DVD drive will not play or burn Cds or DVDs. Just started to 'go wrong' yesterday. Its a Dell E520 running Vista Home Basic

The easitest way restore your computer several days back, or your system recovery which comes with the computer when you first purchased it.

Need to clean every thing thats making computer run slow

If your hard drive is too full, then your computer is going to perform slower. Delete old files which are not required.
Remove programs that you are no longer using. Delete temporary files.
Empty your recycle bin. Right click on Recycle Bin. Click Empty Recycle Bin>Yes.
Run an error check on your computer. The error check can remove errors that slow down your computer. If you are using Windows, you can do this by clicking Start>My Computer. Right click on your hard drive (typically c:) and then select Properties. Click the Tools tab>Check Now and then Start.
Defragment your computer. A fragmented computer runs less efficiently. By defragmenting your computer, your computer will operate in a more logical and faster way.
Clean up your registry. You can purchase software that will fix any registry errors on your computer.
Perform this computer maintenance on a weekly basis.

Ever thing you want to store is being save to drive D. Drive D is full. How do I get it to put file storage back to drive C? Can drive D be filtered, so as to put regular files back to drive C and keep all...

You can transfer anything that is NOT a program. OR used by a program. Otherwise yes you can transfer the stuff from D to C no problems, also run disk cleanup and defragment to get more space back, empty recycle bin etc too. remove all files from TEMP, TMP dir's Compress the drive to save space.

Deleted stuff from recycle bin

Unfortunately no, once the recycle bin is deleted, it removes the files entirely. If the files are very important to you, there's a small chance that they could still be retrieved, but you would have to seek assistance from a Data Recovery service specialist in your area. There are some programs out there that you could purchase as well, that may be able to recover deleted files as well, and would be much cheaper than a data recovery service would, but there's also no guarantee through either of those methods if the results would be successful. My only suggestion at this point, if you want to increase the chances of the data being recovered, is to try and keep your computer as unused as possible, don't add or remove files, don't put stuff in the recycle bin. The reason I say this, is that files, even after their deleted, may leave remnant information behind on the hard drive platters themselves, and if you overwrite those specific sectors with more information, the leftovers usually get written over as well, thus being lost for good. Hope this helps!

Recycle bin

Try fixing it by using System Restore. Just pick a restore point that is dated before the recycle bin became corrupted. Also, you may be the victim of a kind of virus called recycle f**ker it puts a file in your recycle bin that can not be removed and is invisible...
