Alright, please bear with me, as I'm not at all computer savvy. The only computer I own is a Mac (don't panic; I'm totally neutral in the OS war) - the only Windows machine in the house is the family computer which runs on Windows XP. There's probably a simple solution/flat out "no it won't work" to this but I figured I'd ask anyway!
Basically, I purchased a bargain Wacom Intuos2 off eBay as a Christmas present for a very dear friend of mine. It's a serial tablet, and a lot of computers don't support serial connections any more (or so I've heard) so the seller threw in a bargain serial - USB converter for free. I took it out of the box to test it all, but I couldn't get the damn thing to install using the serial to usb adapter. Now, I'm thinking this could be because I was a complete dumbo and didn't realise that there was a driver installation CD in the box (it was hidden in the same sleeve as the painter software disk most tablets come bundled with) so I went around and downloaded a driver off the internet (which didn't work). Realising my mistake I uninstalled the old driver (or at least tried to. Maybe I missed a few files) and went to install the CD. However, no matter which option for installation I clicked (usb or serial) it wouldn't recognize the tablet either way. I didn't do anything special, I just followed the instructions on-screen (run installer, insert tablet when told to, answered "yes" to the question about the tablet light being on) so I'm wondering if there's any trick to getting the accursed thing to work?
It installs absolutely FINE when using a direct serial connection, but the problem is, my friend is on a Windows Vista, which is a laptop. From what I've heard, Vista hates serial connections and I'm not even sure if laptops have a serial port at all. Is there any hope for this tablet or have I made a really stupid mistake? I did do a bit of research beforehand but nothing really came up so I just bit the bullet, bought it and hoped for the best. I'm really beginning to worry myself silly now so any help would be hugely appreciated!
I can't give any specs for my friend's computer, but I can give the family Windows' if necessary. :]
Thanks ever so much in advance,
- Gene
You need the Serial to USB adapter with smart routing. Standard "dumb" adapters don't provide the necessary pass-through that the driver needs in order to recognize the device. This is because of the way USB "sees" devices as opposed to how Serial ports operate.
Look for the Serial to USB adapter from Keyspan. It's a bit more expensive but it provides faster response and direct recognition of the Wacom tablet for the driver.
I am running an Intuos 6x8 serial tablet through a USB Serial Converter into a USB port with Windows XP. I had to install an old driver from a European site to get it to work though... the drivers on Wacom's website did nothing. This is the one that worked for me:

(pc478-6-X_en.exe)
All you need to do is install the dirvers on the waconm site..this will make it compatible with vista.
mine wasnt working but now it does just fine.

Any product you buy it must say made for mac on the box or it will not work with your computer. mac is a special design computer..
You can check in the internet for the new driver and u can install like in XP and you dont find send the model number and the name and i will check for u

I got a wacom intuos 2 12x12 serial tablet second hand and i want to be able to use it on my vista laptop without a serial port. i finally got the tablet working on my old windows xp with a serial port so I know that the tablet is funtional. im not sure if i got a bum serial-usb converter or if i should just be looking for a certain driver. If you know of any drivers that would work, I would appreciate knowing them. ive tried all of the vista drivers on the wacom site to no avail, but i think theyre all designed for USB connections so that could be a problem.
any help you can give is really appreciated
thanks!
