Question about HP LaserJet 1300 Printer
If you have another cable, substitute it for the existing one. This will rule out a faulty one. If not, Just continue.
I have to make several assumptions based on your description so please bear with me. I'm assuming once you downloaded the drivers, you ran the install. We're going to back pedal and try it again.

First check that the driver of this printer is installed on pc or not.
If driver is not installed, the computer will not detect this printer.
If driver is installed and then printer is not detected by the computer then turn your pc and printer turn off, unplug U.S.B cable, plug other U.S.B cable and turn on pc and printer both, Check now.
If problem now also as it is then check your printer with other pc because this is aslo possible that pc U.S.B port is faulty.

try Printer Test page
The Printer Test page contains information about printer driver and port settings. The page also contains information about the printer name and model, computer name, and so on.
You can print the Printer Test page from the printer driver.
is it on the network? login to the printer using http://<ipaddress of printer>
other option is to contact hp support online.
