This may sound stupid but take a blow drying and dry all the inside of your camera..if that doesnt work try hitting the side of your camera...

My Sony Handycam DCR-HC26 started giving me C:31:23 error ''Reinsert the cassette'' when I try to record on a new Sony tape. I am however able play back a previously recorded Sony tape.

the error c:31:23 error pertains to one of the reel (part that turns the tape) is malfunctioning. although you can play back videos, you would definitely have issue w/ recording, rewinding or fast forwarding the tape.what you can do is to turn the camcorder off.remove the battery and ac adapter for at least a minute.insert the battery or reconnect the can also try pressing the reset button (located near the top of the speaker, on the panel where lcd screen goes to).make sure cam is on when you do that.if still your getting this problem, service would be needed for your cam.hope this helps :)

Has error

It's a supply reel fault. I kid you not, the cure is to give it a REASONABLY FORCEFUL open-handed slap on the tape side. it may take a couple of tries but it works about 95% of the time.

"menu" button not working-wont record or play back tapes

when the light flashes it means that there is an error definetly.
turn the menu button on off position first and remove the battery.
reinsert battery and turn on recording mode.
Try to remove the tape and reinsert it and see if the operating light is clear.
let me know if the functionality is restored.

E04 Error

Eject tape leaving cover open and remove battery. Re-insert battery and re-insert tape also leaving cover open. Keep repeating this process until eo4 message disappears. This worked for my GR-DVL100e after about four repeats. After getting your camcorder operational, they say it is good practice not to leave tape in camcorder when not in use.

C:32:11 message flashes, cassette eject won't work, camera doesn't work

Just had this problem myself... called Sony. Here is what I did to fix this:

1. Turn off power
2. Open the LCD Display
3. Press "Reset" with paperclip/pen
4. Unplug ANY wires connected to the camcorder
5. Eject battery
6. Plug in DC charger
7. Power on
8. Attempt to eject tape
9. At this point, the metal tape holder comes out but refuses to open... slightly "close" the portion of the camcorder that has the button to eject the tape, and then open it fully again (you'll hear a click, this signals the device that the 'hatch' is open and to eject).
10. The metal door *should* pop out and allow you to withdraw the tape.

I've tried 4 different cassettes and about 2 seconds after hitting play, I get the error every time... my solution: Not going to try to play my tapes on the camcorder anymore... will find another player to play Hi8 MP cassettes. Unknown if able to record to tape as of yet.

Cannot play tape nor record on tape

This error is a mechanical malfunction, try this:
  1. Eject the tape.
  2. Set to OFF.
  3. Detach the battery.
  4. Reattach the battery.

E04 message

Lisa, E04 is an error code which shows that one or both of the reels has stopped during play or record operation. We find that tapes with liquid contamination can stick to internal parts in the mechanism causing this error. Try another tape, if this does not resolve the problem something is defective in the tape transport. Good Luck to you! Joe Weibel

Has error

Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.
