LCD's inverers are used to channel the dispay just in the same way a latop or lcd pc monitors do, jamie is correct in his diagnosis of the TV because it is to do with the backlight inverter or the inverter coil (this is a coil that is designed to burn out in the event on failure, but not all lcd's have them) this will be a circuit board connected to the screen itself and you can't always tell which has gone, hence to measure the continuity like jamie says.
To replace them is a different story, tracing spares is hard and i would recomend that you call Philips for instuction on how to replace them and how much it would cost

regards

Hi,

Offhand, your description indicates that the unit has gone into protective mode, that is to prevent further damage to the circuitry. this is not a firmware glitch that could be corrected by a reset or unplug from the mains. This is a hardware fault and could possbibly be:

  • the inverter board (most likely);
  • the key control board (likely);
  • the CCF (cold cathode florescent) lamps (least likely).
This would require opening the unit for a look and see. This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

It would be the problem that your tv set is having is coming from the power supply board,either
the board is defective itself or some of the components around the power supply boardare defective like a shorted capacitor or a burnt out resistor can cause this kinds of problems. This is why the tv set is turning on and then off because one or more than one component in the power supply is keeping it on protective mode.Moreover try contacting magnavox see if they have this board,if they do go ahead and get it you should be able to change it out your self with the instructions that come with the board.If for some reason they do not have the power supply board,take it to your nearest tv repair shop depending on the tv repair shop it should not be more than 200 dollars or less to get your tv set up and running ,but it depends on the tv repair shop.

The TV has an internal failure with the power supply or the back light inverter board. If your TV is less then a year old still under manufacturers warranty.
If you know how to use a multimeter, you should be able to find the board that has failed by measuring the voltages from the power supply to the other circuitry; if the voltages are measuring good then is more likely a defective back light inverter board.

    Unplug the power chord for 30 minutes and plug back the power chord after 30 minutes this will reset the tv .

    If there is only one blink it indicates there is low voltage as input better have a check over the input power supply to tv .

I have a magnavox 32mf605w/17 flat screen TV my sound us not working is there any way to hook up external speakers to it?

Hi Lisa,
Many a times the speakers in flat panel TVs go bad. You either change the speakers or hook your tv to some sound system like a home theater or some music system in your house. There is AV out sockets at the back of the TV. Out of the three ie. yellow, red and white use red and white to connect to the music system, put the system on auxiliary mode and enjoy the sound of your tv. Good luck.

My tv powers off as soon as it is turned on, any ideas?

This is an issue that happens with some of the older firmware versions for this tv. You need to check your current firmware in the menue/features. Then go to the philips website and download the current firmware and follow the company instructions for installation via usb.

I have the same issue with my MAGNAVOX 32MF605W/17 when i turn the power on it flashes white then goes black and the amber standby light remains on.... you decribed it as a Mainboard Problem... my issue is...

I had the same problem caused by a power surge. Removed the back cover (kind of a pain in the *** because it's a tight fit) then removed the metal cover over the circuit boards. There were three 1000uf 35vdc capacitors on the Left board capacitors 2074, 2079 and 2080, that had bulged out tops. Replaced those with the same capacitor from radioshack (p/n: 272-1032 stock at most radioshacks)for $3 and the tv works fine. During this I also noted that the plug right next to the power switch down by the face was loose, pressed that in and everything is kosher...good luck
