One line for outgoing faxes only - rings and rings - will not pick up. How should it be configured?

No. I only have capability for outgoing fax. One telephone number 248 569-7976. Set up new telephone yesteday to Comcast modem. Have Comcast High Speed Internet and Phone Service. Answering Maching with new phone. Need configuration set-up help. Never had trouble till now sending outgoing fax on my HP Office Jet 6210 All-In-One. Fax will dial up, but just keeps ringing and ringing. Having trouble with OUTGOING fax.

  • Barbara Asher Nov 22, 2008

I have tried several previously succesful fax numbers - all with the same result ring ring ring - no pick up. The number 248 569-7976 is my home phone FYI. The fax machines I am calling are not turned off I have checked on all of them. I think it is the wiring is configurated. I've spent hours and numurous types of connections - all with the same result. The things that have changed since I began having this problem was connection of a new telephone and changing of my ink cartridges.

You speak of outgoing , but refer to incoming.? Which is it that you are having trouble with? The fax you are calling, or the incoming fax?

If incoming, is it set to answer? If not, set the fax answer mode to ON.

Have you tried a different number.. It almost sounds as if the fax maching you are calling is turned OFF. You might try a different fax number that you know to see if the results are different. Were there filters provided for the VOIP devices?

Cannot receive a FAX but can send FAX on a HP Photosmart C7180 All-in-One

are you using the same line for fax and phone???
are you using a Telephone Answeing machine or a Voice Mail??
However you can follow the following steps

1. Press the power button to turn off the HP fax product.
2. Wait for 20 seconds, and then press the power button to turn on the HP fax product, and then connect one end of a two-wire telephone cord to the telephone jack and the other end of the cord to the port labeled 1-Line on the back of the HP fax product.
3. Make sure that there is plain white paper in the input tray.
4. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
5. Press the down arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.
6. On the Tools menu, press the down arrow to select "Run Fax Test", and then press OK. The Fax diagnostic test prints.
7. Review the report.
If the test lists faxing issues and solutions, the fax test failed.
Try the steps on the printout to troubleshoot the issue as the report is specific to your product and faxing environment.
Repeat the fax test after fixing the listed faxing issues to make sure the test passes. Try to receive a fax.
Okay, next, we need to make sure that the Auto Answer feature is turned on by following the steps below:
When the Auto Answer feature is on, the HP fax product automatically answers incoming fax calls. When off, the HP fax product does not answer any incoming fax calls.
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the down arrow to select Basic Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. On the Basic Fax Setup menu, press the down arrow to select Auto Answer, and then press OK.
4. Press the down arrow to select On, and then press OK.
5. Try to receive a fax.
Since the issue persists, the problem could be due to some conflicting telephone services.
The following telephone company services might block or interfere with incoming faxes:
Distinctive Ring Service: A distinctive ring service, if it is available from the telephone service provider, often resolves this issue.
* Voice mail: It is possible to use the fax in manual receive mode while using a voice mail service. For manual receive mode, turn off auto answer and press "Start Fax Black" or "Start Fax Color" on the control panel before the voice mail picks up the line to start receiving the fax.
* Call waiting: Do not use a call waiting service on the same line connected to the fax machine. The click sound caused by an incoming call can cause the fax to fail.
* Privacy block
* Security screen
* Anonymous call rejection
* Privacy manager
* Any other service that screens or intercepts incoming calls
If any of these services are on the telephone line connected to the HP fax product, contact the telephone service provider for its recommended solution.
After addressing any existing conflicting telephone services, try to receive a fax.
Try contacting telephone people
try changing the settings below
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the down arrow to select Advanced Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. Use the down arrow to select Fax Speed, and then press OK.
4. Use the down arrow to select Medium, and then press OK.
5. Try to receive a fax again. If the HP fax still cannot receive a fax, try lowering the fax speed even further
Next, change the "Rings to Answer" setting on the HP fax by following the steps below:
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Press the right arrow key to select Basic Fax Setup, and then press the OK button.
3. Press the down arrow to select Rings to Answer, and then press OK.
4. Use down arrow to select the desired number of rings, and then press OK. you cn change the rings to answer to 6 if your telephone answering machine picks up the call after 4 rings.
Try to receive a fax.
If the HP fax still cannot receive a fax, change the following steps
1. Press the Setup button on the product Control Panel.
2. Use the down arrow to select Advanced Fax Setup, and then press OK.
3. Use the down arrow to select Error Correction Mode, and then press OK.
4. Use the down arrow key to select Off, and then press OK.
1. Plug the telephone cord directly into the telephone jack and not through any other device.
2. If present, remove any splitters or other devices attached to the line, except for a DSL filter.
3. If the telephone cord is over 3 m (10 ft) long, move the fax closer to the telephone jack, and then use a cord 3 m (10 ft) long or shorter.
4. Connect the other end of the telephone cord directly to the back of the HP fax product into the port labeled 1-Line.
5. If other devices such as, telephone answering machines or computer modems, are attached to the telephone line, remove them. If devices attached to other extensions of the same telephone line are present, remove them for this test.
6. Try to receive a fax.
If removing telephone devices and connections allows the HP fax product to receive faxes, this indicates interference from one or more of the removed devices. Interference can be caused by incompatibility or by using too many other telephone devices at once. Telephone devices can be added back but test after adding each to make sure that they do not start to interfere again.
If the HP fax product still cannot receive a fax after removing other devices, continue with the following steps:
7. If a DSL filter is needed on the telephone line, change the DSL filter and then try to receive a fax. If the HP fax product still cannot receive a fax, proceed to step 8.
8. If a new telephone cord has not been tried, change the telephone cord to a new two-wire telephone cord, and then try to receive a fax again.
Try to receive a fax.
if it does not resolve then perform the following steps
1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
2. Wait for 20 seconds, and then press and hold # and 6 on the product Control Panel.
3. Connect the power cord to the back of the product and then release the buttons when the product turns on.
4. The product resets to factory defaults.
Try to receive a fax.
As a last step, test in another location by following the steps below:
If possible, move the HP fax product to another location with a separate telephone line (another house for instance).
Try to receive a fax at that location, and if you are able to receive faxes from the changed location, then your telephone line should be tested.
If it resolves well and good if it does not then service the printer

Hi my hp 640 will not answer a fax call, but will answer only if we pick up the hand set.

Issue When the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting If Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6. If you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone company (if available). Refer to the Answering faxes manually section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing section below for more information about using distinctive ringing. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. Follow the steps below to check or change the setting for all models except the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series:
  1. Depending on the model, press either Menu , Setup , or Fax Setup repeatedly until Basic Fax Setup appears in the display.
  2. Press Enter (or Start or OK ).
  3. Press the right arrow button repeatedly until Rings to Answer is displayed, and then press Enter .
  4. The number of rings before the HP fax product answers will be displayed.
    • The setting is correct if it is 6. Press Cancel or Stop (Stop Fax) to exit the menu.
    • If the number is not 6, press the right arrow button until 6 appears in the display and then press Enter (or Start or OK ).

How do you set up fax phone on the HP officejet 6215

hi you really have a very good choice of printers is one of the best printers from hp
inorder to set fax on ur printer you should first be sure what type of telephone line you are using
there are 2 type of line 1 dedicated -> that is directly attached for fax and has no other telephone or TAM connected if you have this line you can directly attach the phone line on the printer line 1
the other type of line is shared that means you use the same line for phone and fax in this the connection should be as :- telephone line from wall jack to the printer line 1 then from printer ext port to telephone answering machine (if any ) then from answering machine to telephone (if u have a dsl line that means u use phone and internet from the telephone line then there will be 2 lines comming out of the splitter 1 to router and other to telephone here follow the shared line connection mentioned above using the line that goes to the telephone )
now power on the printer and press the setup button (menu) now navigate to basic fax set up press ok and then go to rings to answer it should be 4 rings now go back and go to advance fax setting and then to distintive ring (DRP) select all rings and press ok now run fax test if it passes then ur fax is set up try sending fax now hope this will help you

Cannot receive faxes

Faxes cannot be received but they can be sent Review the following information to determine why faxes are not being received.
  • Phone company services: Do you have any of the following telephone line services from your telephone company: Voice Mail, Privacy Block, Security Screen, Anonymous Call Rejection, or Privacy Manager? These phone services are meant to prevent unwanted calls, but they will aslo stop faxes. Contact your telephone company for their recommended solution for receiving faxes on the same line with these services.
  • If you wish to receive faxes automatically, verify that automatic answering is enabled on models that have an Auto Answer button, or that the Rings to Answer setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.
  • If you have a HP PSC 2200 or an Officejet 6100 that interrupts calls or will not receive faxes, download and install the HP Firmware update for these products.
    1. Click here to go to the Drivers and Support page .
    2. Type in your model number (HP PSC 2210xi for example).
    3. Click the search arrow to the right of the text entry box. You may be asked to select your product from a list of models.
    4. On the software download page, select your operating system version.
    5. Locate and select the firmware update.
    6. Follow the directions to download and install the update

For more information on using a TAM or distinctive ring service, go to Using the HP All-in-One and Fax Products with a Telephone Answering Machine (buu04072) (in English).
  • If you have a PBX phone system, or an ISDN or DSL modem connected to the line, there may be some phone line configuration problems. Fax machines are analog devices and cannot be used on a digital phone service such as those used in many businesses (PBX systems). Install an analog phone line for a fax machine.
