Question about Dell SK8110 Keyboard

1 Answer

Keyboard SK8110 not registering.

My friend has a problem with his keyboard. He was typing into a search engine, and he pressed 'z', and suddenly his keyboard beeped and all lights on it turned off. The icon in the task bar that notified they keyboard was registered has disappeared. He's tried unplugging, rebooting, checking, and nothing works. His last resort is a system restore. Any suggestions on how to get this problem fixed?

The keyboard is not USB. He uses a cable, I believe, a "PS/2" slot. It's unclear, he's using an on screen keyboard at the moment.

something weird happened. He rebooted and this is what he said to me.
    Konobi says (6:03 PM):
    Well
    I'm working
    And I don't know how.
It's like my computer went into Lockdown
I noticed that my setting where COMPLETELY different.
Like, you know how on most computers, pressing the main power button turns on the PC, and HOLDING it hard resets it, right?
If you press the power button once, all it does is... nothing.:
    When I pressed it..
    The computer immediately responded.:
    It's not supposed to..

Thanks. His keyboard's working, but I'll let him know to buy another, newer model if something happens again. Hard, with the economic thing going on.

Is the keyboard USB or serial?

Try another keyboard to determine if it is the keyboard that is having the problem or the machine.

Although rare, keyboards can die. I would go spend the 5 dollars and grab another keyboard.

I would go to a local computer shop and see if they have used keyboards. No need to buy new if you don't need to.

I have an usb adapter for old ps/2 keyboards, which I tried using for the Dell SK8110 Keyboard. But unfortunately, my laptop needs to install this keyboard's driver for it to function. Any idea where I can...

I think you do not need a driver. Generally ps2 keyboards are detected automatically and work just fine. Still you may go to device manager and un-install the keyboard from there. Then reboot the machine. When it starts again it should detect the modem again.
Note, if you are using a usb mouse please change it to ps2 mouse.

All of a sudden my Dell Dimension 8250 has ''Keyboard failure''. The keyboard is a Dell SK8110 - PS2connector. If I get a USB adaptor, will that bypass this problem? Or is this a driver, registry issue?...

Hi, if you are using a PS2 connector keyboard, I would say that it's a goner. Buy a usb keyboard from any store and that will fix your issue. Don't get rid of the PS2 keyboard until you see your new keyboard working.

For some reason, I can no longer type a colon. I can type a semi colon ;, but shifting does not give me a colon. Can you help?

Has it always been like this? or you noticed it recently? The thing is, sometimes the characters on the keyboard are not where they're mentioned. So check all the other keys while holding down the 'Shift'. I am sure you will find your 'colon' under a bracket or a number.

My dell sk8110 keyboard has a round purple connector plug that fit my old computer. My new computer has only USB ports. How can I connect my keyboard to the new computer?

The round purple connector is refered to as "PS/2" type connector. You can find an adapter that converts PS/2 to USB connector. The above link was just to show what I was refering to. Hope this helps.
