Sanyo VPC-E760 Lens Errors 16 and 21

We just bought this camera and have never used it. The only way to get it to turn on is by having on playback. Everytime it is turned on, it says "LENS ERROR: 21"
The lens won't come out, but the audio recording feature works.
When I turn the dial to take a photo it says "LENS ERROR: 16" and shuts down.
I hope that you can help, I've noticed quite a few people have this same issue.

Unfortunately Wal-Mart won't let us return it. Is there any solutions other than that?

  • wcampos Nov 21, 2008

    That didn't help, sorry.

Hi,

May I offer a go for broke, not necessarily technical? Jar the camera. You can try hitting the base against the palm of your hand. The ides is to shock the mechanism just so it would start. Some others have reported success using an open book instead of the palm of your hand.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Milespeed could be kinda right on this one, if facing it the ground and tapping on it firmly while turning on is not working, get a tin of WD40 spray and spray the zoom mechanism on the front of the camera, leave for a few minutes and repeat the tapping process again.
Don't worry about the spray bothering the camera, it is designed not to harm electronics or electicals but would need a good wipe down afterwards

If none of these work, you will have to take it to a service centre for them to give you an estimate on the repair costs

the zoom mechanis, may also have "dent" preventing them to extend, this will cause a malfunction in the phones electronics causeing the error code you describe

Wendy,

this is caused by either grit inside the shaft alongside the lens, or it comes from a bent shaft. based on what you have mentioned here, I suspect dirt..so, get an air tool, like a compressor, or the air cleaning cans, and try simply blowing the air stream around the lens shaft..might dislodge something..

that said, this might be a fatal failure on this item.

To fix this problem is quite a job. I took mine apart to find what had happened and worked out why it wouldnt work. It is very difficult unless you have taken things apart before. Basically there is a large ring gear that turns to focus the lens. inside this ring there is 3x pairs of vertical grooves a thicker set of grooves which is to locate the ring over lugs and a thinner set of grooves which is used to drive the lens out. What happens is the shock of being dropped jumps the grooves so the lens pins go into the thicker track which then jams. Even when i sorted the lens it wont work as i think it burnt out something. although it does drive out correctly now.

You need to return your damaged camera...i think it was dropped and damaged the lens barrel or other misuse. caused the lens barrel to be dinked and not allow it to open and extend.. did you find it worked properly before you took it home from store or?

SOURCE: my sanyo camera is not working

Well maybe I can solve this..... My lens would not retract and showed two error messages. Tried a number of tricks that have been recommended on this site to no avail. Ultimately what worked for me was pushing quite hard on the barrel of the lens trying to force it back in ( yeah i know, sounds extreme but did'n't think it could make the situation any worse ). The lens remained in the locked out position not moving in spite of the fact that I pushed it fairly hard. When I turned it on the lens retracted and it appears to be fully recovered from whatever was ailing it. Hope this works for you.

Lens 21 error vpc-e760

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Lens Errors 17 & 27 on Sanyo VPC-E760

My camera was showing lens error 12&25 and then shutting off. I tried gently trying to twist and pull the furthest out part of the lens and it popped back into place easily. It made a noise when it did this, and then i turned the camera off, and the lens went back in!! Completely fixed now!!
