Hooked to surround sound, two front speakers, 4 wall speakers, 1 sub woofer. Restart unit and reduce volume unit is OK but normal talking is too low.

Voice tracks are usually routed to the center channel. You don't mention having a center channel speaker hooked up. If this is the case, then you need to go into the receivers setup menu and set it for no center. This will reroute the voice tracks to your front speakers.

How to hook up to panasonic tv & sony dvd player

DVD output (HDMI) to HDMI input on TV will transfer both audio and video from DVD to TV. Audio output on TV to unused Input on Yamaha receiver (Aux, CD, etc.). This hookup will allow DVD and TV channels audio playback through your Yamaha receiver. Remember to test any/all new hookups or connections using minimum settings (volume, etc.), and bring up levels slowly for the initial testing.

Regardingt he display differing from the actual speaker complement, THAT is up to the user to set up. The unit probably doesn't falsely 'sense' the phantom speakers.

Have you looked at the manual?

The specific product you're inquiring about is not showing in your post. Name the make and model first, then we'll look for the manual. Then (maybe) find a solution. You might find it at the manufacturer's support site or these guys...

When trying to watch a dvd through a blu ray player, the background sound is coming in loud and clear, however when the main actors talk, their voices are not coming through.

Hello,
If you don't have a center channel you will experience this problem. The center channel is where all dialog is sent to. To fix it, you need the set the receiver to phantom center. Go into the setup menu into speaker setup and tell the receiver that you dont have a center channel installed. Once you do that, it will send dialog the the front left and right speakers.
Good Luck

Is it possible to hook up a powered subwoofer to this unit? It has a centre pre-out, but nothing labelled for a sub, and the manual is useless. This is a very nice old receiver, works perfectly, and I'm...

I own 2 of these Pioneer VSX-D903S units.

The only way to hook a powered subwoofer up to a VSXD903S is if your subwoofer is equipped with amplified/speaker level terminals on the back, in addition to the line-level input. If you only have a line-level input, do not attempt to hook it up to this receiver.

If you're lucky, and have speaker-level inputs on your powered subwoofer, you would use the amplified terminals (connect to B-channel on the receiver). DO NOT connect anything to the line-level connection.

Alternatively, you could build two unpowered subwoofers, then set the receiver's Impedance switch to LOW, then connect one enclosure to each of the "B-channel" outputs. Connect your regular left and right speakers to their corresponding "A-channel" outputs. [Impedance range: 4 Ohm minimum, 16 Ohm Maximum]

(To the guy [dunnbiker] that says there's no rear channels: You're wrong.) The VSX-D903S has 2 stereo (A/B) channels, dual center channel (place center speakers to the left and right, or above and below the screen), and two rear satellite channels. It is a 3-Ch Logic/Dolby Pro-Logic Surround equipped receiver, not a DolbyDigital/DTS multichannel x.1 surround unit.

Hello, The receiver I have is a Motorola.

Satellite out is likely intended for relay purposes so that if you have more than one receiver, you can connect both to the same satellite dish.

There should be Video out, such as composite, component or HDMI. You'll want to connect that to the TV.

If your TV has a built in digital receiver (such as for cable or satellite TV), what is likely happening is that your TV itself is now attempting to find a channel instead of your Motorola receiver, unless you are certain that the menus you are navigating are those used on the Motorola receiver, not on your TV.

If connecting the video-out cables from the receiver to the TV doesn't alleviate the issue, please post a follow up here with the model numbers for your TV and receiver.

Improper equalizer between VSX-49TXi and LD player,no sound now

Hello,
You may want to buy the service manual (SM) from Pioneer for this unit. It has a lot of info on resetting and testing the receiver under the "Test Mode". It is highly improbable that you could ruin the firmware by connecting the receiver in an unusual way. You may just need to reset it to factory specs. Another option if you bought it from a local Pioneer dealer is for them to reset. It usually involves getting into the secret menu to do so.
I had one of these for a short while and they are quite nice receiver.
Good luck

Sony DAV-HDX500/HDX501W Center Channel

Try connecting it to the left or right output from the amp to make sure the speaker actually works. It might be the receiver that's the problem. Also, you must be in one of the surround sound modes on the receiver and not the "phantom" mode as it does not give output to the center channel.

you may be using an equalizer? try to pop-up the volume with all tone controls in flat mode. see if it still cuts off. if this is the first time youencounter this then something must be wroing with either your speakers or your amp. unless your ventilation is not good enoughg, you can also try placing a blower on top of your unit to cool it down
