Black Screen: SONY KPR4110 (new='86) 41'' Rear Projection TV

Black Screen: SONY KPR4110 (new='87-'88) 41" RearProjection TV ...about a year after this unit was new it started giving (only) a Black Screen at turnOn (but PowerLight=green/on). The unit has been in storage ever since. Now its out of storage - and still doing the same thing (...thought it might 'fix itself' - guess not!) Found service manual on web (for $36): A--SERVICE MANUAL ***NLA*** Sony Part Number: 9-963-419-01 Sony Model: KPR4110 Is there any possibility that this would lead to solution? (used to do electronics in Navy - '64 thru '71 but not since - so skills = 'rusty'. Any suggestions ?

I had the same problem. The sound and picture went off for about one minute and the green power light flashed green. Then the TV came back on. It sometimes stayed on for hours and sometimes went off again in a few minutes. The TV is just over 3 years old. Had the service people out and the problem was the bulb. It cost $420.00 to fix. He said our bulb lasted twice the average life. I wish that I had known this since it is a simple fix and the cost of the bulb on line is under $200.00.

SOURCE: sony projection tv convergence issue

You will need two STK392-560 Convergence ICs and you will also need two of the 3.5 amp pico fuses as Sonys will always blow at least two of the Pico fuses. You can get replacement ICs and Pico fuses at the fiollowing link and they provide free instalation instructions. Heres the link.

behind the front grille there is a wooden panel remove it and yo will see a small black epoxy box with 6 knobs sticking out from it.
with the color turned down all the way, look closely for r,g,b on the box beside each knob this denotes which knob is for which color.
you need to adjust the 1 marked g on the bottom row. this adjusts the green bias to the green tube. this will get rid off the whiteish lines. adjust this knob counterclockwise in a darkened room untill the color shows a black and white picture. adjust slowly as the set will be monitoring what you are doing and will adjust itself as you adjust. bring the green down just enough so you don't see anything, make sure that you don't see red or blue either, if you do also adjust untill you don't see any color. these adjustments should be done with the input set to a video input that has no signal coming in the set will show the input label and nothing else.
when you have the raster( screen ) all dark you can go to an input with a signal and make sure the image is black and white adjust the bias of the color that is too much so that it is black and white.
hope this makes sense to you. now turn the user color control back to where you want are done. reassemble, enjoy
you might have to do this again in a few months as the control you have adjusted are dirty and can't be cleaned with a cleaner.
moving these controls cleans them but the color balance procedure would have to be completed after such movement of these contols and any quick movement would have to be done with the set turned off. a quick back and forth movement will do a better job cleaning the tracks inside that adjustmet block but will mean you will need to do the setup adjustment all over again in order to get the screen blank and the color to balance to black and white. the top 3 knobs are for focus of the individual colos only adjust if the red, green or blue isn't sharp, you can try these to see with out doing harm. finally if thebias is too low then th lifgt on the front of the set might blink at you and the auto alignment might get part way through and stop. if this happens you need to bring the bias adjustment back up slightly. adjust only the bias for the tube that has too much color to start with and if this happens you will know that the bias control you just adjusted is the 1 that needs to be adjusted slightly.

SOURCE: Sony - KP61XBR48. I need to know a model of the replacement Lamp

First of all, there are no lamps inside this set, there are CRTs. These are not just replaced as lamps would be. The CRTs themselves will run at leas $80 each. To change these will require replacing the coolant for the CRT as well which is not a DYI type of job. The coolant is dangerous and needs to be handled carefully. Also, once a CRT is replaced, a complete mechanical and electronic convergence adjustment must be made. There is a specific order in which to do this that is outlined in the service manual and it requires a template that would need to be purchased as well.

Unless there is a specific problem that needs to be addressed, it is unlikely that any of the CRTs needs to be replaced.

If you are having a problem with the set, can you please update this with a description of the problem? We should be able to assist in the resulution of the problem with something less drastic than CRT replacement.

If the convergence option is still visible under the picture settings in the menu. Then the problem will usually be related to the convergence power supply board, which is the board on the far left which is suspended over the main chassis. You can get the convergence power supply board, or have yours repaired at
