Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+
New 3/4 hp craftsman-
trolly closes to up stop ok. Trolley on down cycle only moves about 36" & stops either with door connected or not connected. to it. Unit is new & has never been used since it won't close. door! Door opens & closes full up or down by hand. Safety LED's are ok & aligned. Trolley works ok within limits described above either from wall keypad or from remote control. Opener lights work ok, on & off.
Problem summarized: trolley doesn't go far enough on the track to close the door. The door has no obstructions binding or blocking down travel.
thanks, jack duboff
There are adjustments on the unit itself that control the distance door travels to close as well as the force it uses to close. The info and location of controls is indicated in the manual that came with your unit.

You probably have a stripped gear. Take the cover off the opener and the bottom will be filled with white shavings and the gear will be missing teeth. You can repair with a liftmaster gear and sprocket kit.

It sure sounds like you have a broken door spring. While you are at it remove the cover and take a good look at the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Might be stripped and unable to take the weight of the door.

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.
