Question about Rheem RTG-53PVN Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater for 1-2 Bathroom H

Rheem RTG 53 PVN with fault codes C4 or C7

My tankless water heater has been increasingly noisy over the past year (its almost 2 years old). Suddenly, it won't make hot water for very long. The control flashes fault codes of C4 then 76 (alternating) until I unplugged it, waited and then reconnected it and tried to use it again. Now it flashes C7 76 and won't produce any more hot water. What is the problem?

Thanks

Same problem after one year of use.

  • timsnegri Jan 04, 2009

I have the same problem with a Rheem Pronto tankless heater after one year. My plumber said nothing about a water softener voiding the warranty. My error code however, is C7 followed by a flashing 13.

  • ageedan Jan 11, 2009

We've had our unit for almost two years. The hot water kicked off and after resetting the unit several times it still won't work and has stopped producing hot water. The code C7 comes up and alternates to 76.

I cleaned both the air take filter and water filter but did not solve my problem.
    Help!

I am having the same exact problem with my Rheem.. we have had ours almost 2 years and it has been noisy and giving us the error off and on for the past year.. now it is constant.. if I can get it to reset it only heats for a max of 3 minutes then it starts the errors.. I will try the solutions below..

I had the same problem with my tankless waterheater (flashing c4 76 alternately). I called Rheem
tech support and they had me 1 power down the remotepanel 2 unplug the unit from the wall 3 remove the cover 4 remove the wires for the remote panel from the circuit board and pull the twisted pair that goes to the remote out from the bottom of the unit. 5 reinstall the cover 6 plug the unit back
into the wall and turn on the hot water see if it works. It did in my case and they are sending me a new remote panel. I hope it helps.........

First off, if you don't have a water softener supplying the tankless you have voided your warranty; it's in the fine print. The mineral deposits build up and clog the heat exchanger; that may not be the problem because you're not having water pressure issues. Furthermore, you don't need the control unit for the tankless to operate; remove the control unit and unplug / shut off the breaker for atleast 3 minutes. Turn the power back on and see if that resets the unit; this may get your hot water back until you can determine the error code. I will look up the Rinnai error codes tomorrow and get back to you on this since my experience with Rinnai products is limited.

More important than the c4 is the error code of 76. It is that the remote is not talking to the heater. I directly connected my remote to the heater and the problem went away.
