Most newer computer have energy saving features that turn off the monitor, hard drives and various other components after a designated period of time.
Open the panel where you change the screensaver. At the bottom of that should be a box that says "Change power settings". In that box click the power settings link and that will open the power control panel. You can then use the contols in there to adjust the settings to how you like them. you can set it to power down after 5 minutes or never depending on what you feel is apropriate.
