Acer Travelmate 2410 - Screen is blank

Have used recovery disks to re-set to factory settings but had to use an external monitor. That will not work now after the Recovery Disk re-boot, presumably because Windows XP Home is set to a different screen resolution not within the normal range of my BENQ FP71E monitor.

The laptop screen remains blank, as it did previously, but may show, after a short time, coloured vertical lines.

The sound card seems to work as it plays the music for the Windows Tour.

Can it be the screen or maybe the graphics card onboard the M/B?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The screen never shows anything after the vertical lines appear.... cannot see Windows XP at all!!

  • mike-m5 Nov 22, 2008

Apart from coloured stripes, the screen doesn't show anything. It's effectively blank so I can see nothing to be able to carry out any instructions to Windows,DOS whatsoever.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the suggestion of FN + F5 keys, but it doesn't help with the external monitor. All I get on that display is a warning sign, "Out of Range". I have been into the Acer 2410 bios (pressing F2) and set everything to default values. At this point, the external monitor works. The Acer screen then shows some life, a dull glow, but then the Benq monitor shows nothing but the warning.

However, I seem to be off the original thread when asking about the TFT display or the onboard graphics. Any other ideas my friends???

    Kind regards,
    Mike

I AM MORE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT IS CAUSING THE LACK OF DISPLAY ON THE ACER TFT SCREEN - COULD IT BE THE SCREEN, THE INVERTER OR EVEN THE ON-BOARD GRAPHICS CARD CAUSING THE PROBLEM ?

Yes, Benimur's comments were particularly helpful. I just needed to know the percentages as to whether it was the LCD screen itself or M/B graphics. Whichever way you look at it, the laptop is probably scrap anyway, so, it looks like I'll be buying a new one.

    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP BENIMUR....

If you are using the external and it works.. your LCD screen is gone.. you need to get it replace. assuming your LCD works fine before you restore the factory setting.

Vertical colored stripes on your screen means:

Bad LCD ribbon cable.

or

Bad LCD display.

Very but very rarely is a bad video adapter on motherboard.

Tou need to go to a repair shop, or to send the laptop for repairs.

The technician will remove the upper panel, undo the hinges, open the display remove and test cable and replace either one.
Here the job is about $100/$150, depending if the problem is the cable or the display.

Regards.

Either your graphics agp slot needs the driver updating or the card itself is faulty, check the agp slot for dust and gently moneuvre the card in the slot to see if the lines appear to change and check that therea are no bent pins in your connecting plug or card.

Hi,

Sorry to be bringing you the bad news, but it would appear that your Acer Travelmate 2410 laptop has:

  • a defective LCD display panel (most likely);
  • the graphics/video chipset is defective (least likely).
Additionally, I doubt if the BENQ FP71E is not capable of displaying the resolution after the re-install. Have you tried pressing Fn + F? keys? The F? would be the F key with the small monitor icon. You may need to press on the combination of Fn + F? several times to cycle on LCD only, LCD + external and external only.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

It may have switched back to display mode ONLY for the laptop monitor.
Try pressing <Fn> and <F5> a few times and see if that gets the display on the external to come on.

Hope this helps
Dave

Sir,

I think u didn't install the motherboard drivers of your software. If installed right click at desktop-> go to properties-> Go to setting tab check if it is Selected Highest 32 bit and also adjust the screen resolution to 1024 by 768 or 1152 by 864 try to change these settings..if it is not listed, it mean u would not properly installed the drivers including monitor.

Thanks
good luck

Have you tried upgrading BIOS to most current version.
There is some chance that voltage settings for video chipset may be wrong .

  • SAM ANDERSON Nov 21, 2008

Make sure the video cable is properly connected to the motherboard,
    reset the connection.
    Unplug the cable from
the motherboard, take a look inside the video connector.
    Check if there
are any bent pins inside the connector.

Factory reset for Aspire one without disk and alt + F10 doesnt work

The disk-to-disk recovery may be disabled preventing the Alt + F10 key sequence running eRecovery. To enable disk-to-disk recovery, you must do the following... (do not have an external monitor attached)
1. activate the BIOS utility by pressing F2 during Power On System Test (while Acer logo displayed)
2. select Main from the categories listed at the top of the screen
3. find D2D Recovery at the bottom of the screen and use F5 and F6 keys to set this value to Enabled
4. exit the BIOS utility and save changes.
The system will reboot.
5. while the Acer logo is showing, press the Alt key and the F10 key at the same time repeatedly
6. wait as Acer eRecovery starts up then follow onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.

Alternatively to the above, if Windows can be accessed, the recovery can be done by launching Acer eRecovery Management by running the program from the Acer Empowering Technology program group in the Start menu.

My FN+F6 doesnt keep my screen on the laptop open

Change the settings from the display settings panel. (Right click on the desktop and go to display settings)
You should see 2 monitors graphically represented there.
You can make the monitor that is greyed out active by right clicking on the monitor, and selecting active.
