Question about Brother HL-2070N Laser Printer

Open Question

Brother HL-2070N prints very light even with new Toner cartridge.

I've been having a lot of problems with faint printouts lately.  I replaced the toner cartridge and drum assembly but that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.  In addition, my printer makes intermittent squeaking noises when printing and last time I tried to investigate them I could not open the toner access door all the way.  On closer inspection there appears to be a sliding arm on the left side that will not extend all the way out to allow me to open the door.  Any ideas on this?

My printer seems to have the same problem: doors open with difficulty and it prints very pale unreadable copies. The printer is fairly new, so I don't think I need a new drum. New cartridge makes no difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Brother MFC 7420 but have the same issue. It looks to be a broken plastic piece which rotates the toner. Not sure if brother has parts to change. Not a good situation.

did you remember to remove the seal on the toner cart? this is a breakaway tab usually on the side, this when pulled removes the plastic seal,(from inside the cartridge)

SOURCE: HL-2070N will not properly print

My guess is the problem is with Firefox trying to print the page and not the printer. Try to go to File > Print Preview and see if it looks normal there. If not, I have 3 suggestions:

  1. Try to change the "Page Options" or "Scale" under the Print Preview
  2. Try to install and use the Firefox Add-On "IE Tab". This gives you the choice to display the page with Internet Explorer, while still using Firefox. You can turn on IE Tab, and then try to print. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
  3. Upgrade to Firefox 3.

SOURCE: BROTHER Hl 2040 PRINTER WON'T PRING

I got exactly the same problem and the "reset" didn't do anything. I fixed it by putting a piece of duck tape on magic eye on the cartridge.
Fallow those step to do the same thing as me:

  1. Open the front panel.
  2. Remove the toner and the drum
  3. Remove the toner FROM the drum
  4. On each side of the toner, there should be a little glass. Put the piece of duck tape on one of them. I put mine on the right side.
  5. Put everything back in.
  6. Turn on your printer if it's not already.
  7. Now, the low toner light should be gone and the green light should be on.
Now, you can really empty your cartridge.

My brothers printer 2170w has toner sprayed all over in printout

Three possibles for this.
1 A faulty cartridge dropping toner on the paper as it passes through the drum. - remove the toner cartridge and look for lots of loose toner in the drum.
2 The drum cylinder is dirty and needs to be cleaned with alcohol and a cotton ball. Toner can build up on the drum cylinder and also the cleaning brush inside the drum assembly. These would need to be cleaned - or replace the drum. And 3 progressively either or both of the above two may have lead to a build up of toner on the fuser at the back of the machine. In very bad cases the teflon type coating on the fuser may have peeled. If the fuser is dirty, it can be removed and cleaned. If it has become damaged - forget it, just buy a new machine.

Printing not dark enough or varied in darkness
If the print is a dismal gray rather than a sharp black, you are probably almost out of toner. This can manifest itself evenly across the entire page or in splotches or stripes, depending on the printer.

Sometimes you can wring a little bit more out of a toner cartridge by taking it out and gently shaking it from side to side (never up and down, as toner can spill out). You can also try turning up the printer’s contrast adjustment, if it has such a knob (usually on the back side if it exists). Faded print can also result from a dirty corona wire, because a dirty wire inhibits a full electrical charge from being passed.

If the printouts are consistently varied in density, and you have to frequently remove the toner cartridge and shake it to redistribute the toner inside it, make sure the printer is sitting on an even, flat surface.

Horizontal black lines
A horizontal black line on the printout is probably the result of a dirty or damaged roller. There are lots of rollers in the printer, and you can use the space between the lines on the page to determine which roller is causing the problem. Measure the distance between the errant black lines on the page and then use Table A to determine which part might be causing the problem. Table A
Distance between lines
Faulty part
0.5”
Registration assembly
1.5”
Upper registration roller
1.75”
Lower registration roller
2.0”
Toner cartridge developer roller
2.56”
Lower fusing assembly roller
3.16”
Upper fusing assembly roller
3.75”
Toner cartridge photo drum

Regularly spaced splotches
If there are evenly spaced black spots but they don’t extend all the way across the page, the problem is probably a scratch or flaw in the drum or a build-up of toner on the fusing roller. If the spots are less than three inches apart vertically, it’s probably the drum, because the drum has a larger diameter than the fusing roller.

Vertical black line on edge of page
This can indicate an almost empty or faulty toner cartridge or (less frequently) some spilled toner inside the printer.

Step1:Take out cartridge, check any vertical toner tracks on cartridge drum surface? replace cartridge if found. Step 2: Remove back cover take out fuser assembly, verify any toner tracks or toner particles deposited on Teflon sleeve?replace teflon sleeve.

I have a Brother 2170W printer. Worked well for years but suddenly had some blank columns down the center. Took it to a repair shop and they said it needed a new drum and printer. I purchased and installed...

Hi Len,

Thankyou for explaining you problem to me, it makes life a little easier when you have no hands but are equiped with the facts.

I too would normally think Drum/Toner or Carona but it seems you have covered those, the carona is in the drum but if you switch the drum and the marks dont change then that cant be the issue. Here is a LINK to the carona cleaning instructions and below I'll past a pic of the carona position.

If a good Brother branded toner doesn't fix it, and you have fitted a new sealed brother original drum and that doesn't fix it, there are only two possible things left, one is the fuser at the rear that melts the toner to the paper but I doubt that one because it usally leaves lumpy marks on paper surface, but you could get a touch and look at the two width of the machine rollers at the rear and see if the coating has come off the teflon roller.

What I think is your issue is there is toner dust on the laser lens, it is a **** 1-2cm wide running width of machine, it resides inside the machine about midway directly above carona slot, get a soft cloth and wipe the lens.

Let me know if the lens clean does the trick, otherwise it must be 2 lots of faulty toner but the image would change or two dirty carona's/worn drums but once again image would at least change.

Make sure you reset the drum counter, heres a (link) to how

Cheers Steve

Laser jet produces printouts that are smudged and dark

Remove the toner cartridge and use a soft cloth to wipe the photo drum clean of toner. Put it back and try again, if you still get bad prints, then you need a new toner cartridge.

I am getting a faint line all down the page

Most likely you have a defective black toner cartridge. Open the front shutter on the black toner and look at the drum. If you see the drum has toner on it corresponding to the line down the page, you found the problem. If you can't see anything on the drum try printing a page and then interrupting the printout while the page is still in the printer. If you see the line on the page before it goes through the fuser, (the last roller thing on the top of the printer) then it still is the toner cartridge. If it occurs only after the fuser then it, the fuser, is at fault.

Ghost Image

The problem is related to either the toner cartridge or the fuser assembly. If you have changed the toner since the problem started, then it is the fuser. The fuser's job is to melt or "fuse" the powdered toner to the page. If the roller in the fuser is worn out, it will repeat the image as sort of a negative further down the page. The part # is RM1-0865 but this part should be replace by a certified technician.

Hope this helps!

Light and broken printout and black mark on the backside

Have the service people set the machine to add toner(per pixelcount) and test run it for a day or two. If this works it means the sensor in the developer unit that tells the machine to add toner from the cartridge is bad. If that is the case replace the sensor. It sounds like the machine is not adding toner to itself. Have them also test the toner motor.
