Question about Televison & Video

I have a 42" Sony

I have a 42" Sony MBT-XBR 900 plasma flat screen that recently developed a 1 inch wide vertical line that goes from the top to the bottom of the screen about 1/4 of the way from the left side of the unit. When watching TV, there's a tiny bit of snow that comes through. In DVD mode, it's totally black. Any idea what the problem is, and what it might cost to fix? Thanks.

Thanks. How do I fix this and what might it cost?

  • petermedvin Nov 21, 2008

Any idea about how much?  If it's going to cost me $400-$500 to get this done, I may be better off buying a new set, prices being what they are...

I'll try to dig out the user manual. Do other folks agree that this is probably a home fix?

Whether it is a home fix, depends on your level of expertise. if you are ok with following some of the advice here, and are accustomed to this, then go for it. otherwise, recycle the unit

You need service manual to diagnose problem board.
It would be better to get new LCD TV instead of to repair Plasma. Please ask Sony Sales store for exchange this TV with LCD as they might have scheme.
Good Luck.

This sounds more like the horizontal possitioning has changed, "snow in TV mode" and "black stripe in DVD mode" you should be able to adjust these using the user manual and cost nothing to put right. get the user manual reset the tv to factory settings that should do the trick!!

its worth a try for nothing, troubleshooting the tv first to rule out other possibilities is always a good thing to do, the manuals can be a good source of information when a "glitch" happends on the system and refering to these can resolve many problems without paying a hefty price for servicing.
Sony only give limited info out ot the websites, so a good idea would be to phone them if all else fails

    regards

That is either a faulty sustain board or a faulty chip on cable inside the tv.

There is no faulty IC on the main board.

The most common cause is a faulty built-in chip on cable technology. The ribbon cable that connects to the plasma screen has a built in chip to encode the signal, when the chip is faulty, you get either a thick black band, or the screen is black from the point where the cable connects to the screen.

You find out if it is the cable because you will see that the area with no raster on the screen will start fron the point where the cable hooks up.

Sometimes a faulty sustain board can give you same problem, in this case you will see the area with no signal in correspondence to sustain board location.

To fix this the TV must be taken apart, and being it a delicate and expensive set, it is always better having the job done by a technician.
Both the cable and sustain board are not expensive parts.

    About the repair.

    Check this picture:

What you see in the picture are the flex cables at the bottom of the plasma screen, if one of them is defective you get this problem.

The repair should be a $80/$120 fee for the labor plus the part price, let say that it should go around $200 if it is one of the flex cable, and up to about $400 if it is some other problem, if the whole plasma screen is defective it will be above $500, but this is rather unlikely.

The best thing to do is ringing Sony and asking a prheventive quote on the repair. You can also ask them the terms for a warranty extension.

A warranty extension is usually cheaper than a single repair and will cover your TV for 3 extra years.

Here is an example of warranty extension, call Sony or call a dealer to find a warranty extension package that applies to your TV set: Sony Upg Warranty 3YR Total Depot SVC Plasma ...

I am not just another guy, and I am telling that unless you fix this with an hard reset by leaving the TV unplugged, this is not going to be a home fix.

You have two professional technicians in here, the other one is welcomejee, that works in a TV repair workshop, the rest of the comments are coming from user levels that are just sharing their personal opinions or trying to use some common sense.

Green vertical line on videocon 42inch plasma tv

Hello Depending how wide the line is their could be two possible causes.
I have two questions for you.
1. How wide is the line.
2. Does it run from top of screen to bottom of screen?
If the line is thin a single strait line then it is possible the PDP has gone Bad (Panel). (Screen). The screen will to be replaced.
If the line is at least 2 or more inches wide then its a buffer board which can be replaced. LG calls this board Hand insert Boards or display driver boards..

sounds like a power control board related problem i would leave this one to the experts.

A thermo fuse I doubt it. you dont have a temperature control type problem but a power distibution problem seems more realistic.

BLUE VERTICAL LINE

The address module that is at the bottom of the PDP in that location is the suspect and the cheapest repair. There is usually 3 to 4 modules at the bottom of the PDP and each one addresses information vertically. If it were just one pixe wide then the PDP would be bad.
