If so, boot up with that and choose "R" at the first menu, that will get you into the recovery console, from there, at the prompt, type in "chkdsk /r" without the quotation marks.

Let check disk run, it may take some time, but when it's finished, type in "exit" and let the system reboot. Hopefully it will fix any system files that may have gotten corrupted.

If that doesn't work, post back.

Good Luck!

Blue screen error all the time

The 'blue screen of death' usually means a hardware/physical problem, probably with the hard-drive. Have you tried reinstalling/repairing windows? That usually works.

Hard disk making funny noise and netbook does not recognise boot device after automatic windows update and restart.

You either have an error with your hard disk or with the Windows partition files.

Some HP Mini Netbooks have a hard drive self-test feature. In order to check for a hard drive problem, turn on your computer and press the "F10" key during startup. This will open the Setup Utility. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Diagnostics" menu, then highlight "Hard Disk Self Test". Let the test run fully. If it reports an error(s), then you have a damaged/defective hard drive, and you will need to replace it by either contacting HP through their support site, or by replacing the drive yourself with a new one.

If the Setup Utility cannot detect your hard drive at all, then you either have a defective hard drive /or/ a defective SATA controller (this is what connects your hard drive to the computer). Unless you can connect your hard drive to another computer, it is very hard to determine which is causing the problem. You should contact HP if you are under warranty, or check in at a local computer repair shop if you are not.

If there are no errors reported with your hard drive, then either your hard drive only fails some of the time (and you should be able to boot into Windows at the moment), or there is a problem with the partition (section) on your hard drive that handles booting up. You will need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows in this case.

I am getting an error message that says a SMART error has occurred and my hard disk will fail. When I press more information it says SAMSUNG HM250HI has failed and may crash at anytime. Disk defragment...

SMART is the hardware monitoring system that is put inside every hard disk. If it reports that the disk has failed then it has really failed - there is nothing left to do, copy (and nothing else or it will completely die faster) what you still can from it and junk it.

My computer says there is no disk or please insert disk

disk, are you referring to a cd/dvd disc or are you reffering to a harddrive disk??? If you are reffering to a harddrive disk, then your hard drive is either damaged/ or inproper loose connection or if it s usb/network disk, make sure it is plugged or configuration is changed in the bios menu. If this is a harddrive disk, and after POST or startup, it is giving you this error message, then before we pressume it being damged, check in your bios menu to see if the bios reconized the hard drive disk, if not, your hard drive is damaged and needs to be replaced.

I keep getting the following error even after formatting the machine(windows xp sp3) "Non system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready" ..if i insert an Operating System disk,...

Hello.

I suspect that your hard drive is faulty. If you formatted your drive, due to getting errors, this could be your problem in the first place.

I´d suggest running the hardware diagnostics (usually F2 or F12 upon boot) to see if that info is confirmed).

Hope this helps.

Since I connected a Seagate Replica 500GB Hard Drive, I started receiving multiple Error 51 Events in my Windows Event log. They state: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR9 during a paging...

First, extract all data that you have on the hard-drive, while you still can.

Seagate's web-site suggests that you first download and run Seagate's "Drive Fitness Tool", which exercises the disk-drive, and produces a "fitness" report. If it fails, then delete all your "private" files, and either take the drive back to the retail location where you bought it, or get an RMA (Return Materials Authorization) from Seagate, to get permission from Seagate to return the drive to them, for them to analyze the disk, and probably replace it.

Macbook Leopard 10.5.6 cannot open any applications on hard drive or CD drive. Pulldown menus not functioning. all f keys function normally. Ran disk utility and checkout ok for hardware test, disk and...

could be a hardware problem to be honest. heres what you should try: load a system disk and hit C during boot up and see if you have the same symptoms in disk boot mode. if you do, than it is most likely a hardware issue. if you dont, it could be software related. if that doesnt work: hit V when you boot up and it will go into verbose mode. this will show you all of the background processes that are working during startup. while watching the screen, check to see if you have any stalls during load and note them. also, disconnect all peripheral devices and try removing ram (1 stick at a time) to see if that is a problem as well.

Error 0x400 110020000 1005 using recovery disc

use xp os disk and use repair os ...
boot from xp os disk choose install new NOT repair and system will examine and detect that an os already exists and give options continue install new, repair or quit...at this point choose repair..
install new and repair both take around about the same time to complete only repair leaves existing files or downloads previously saved intact and available.also when you install new often you need to find certain software/drivers as windows doesnt install by default (wireless, blutooth, sometimes modem, often vga.) I have my device drivers on a cd for whenever if ever I may need.
once your up and running install a recovery suite that can recover from startup.if you cant find one or dont know of one send ur email and I'll send you the one I use.
then next time you have a software issue you just hit f11 at start and entire hard drive is repaired/recovered in about 5 or 6 min.

Try pressing F2 / Del key during startup. That should bring the bios setup. Now Restore that defaults & install OS on your HDD. If you are not using Floppy drive, disable the onboard floppy controller from BIOS.
