You will need to open up the side panel, and then remove the screws, or use the slider to open that..then the cd or dvd will slide out the front through the slot..you will need to disconnect the connection cable and power connector in back, before it releases.

ADD OPTICAL DRIVE TO GATEWAY FX6840

OK add one. All you do is take the old one out and put the new one in after you open the case and unplug the power cord. There might even be an open slot under or above the one that is already in the computer so just push the plastic covering that faces the front of the computer out so the new optical drive can go in it's place. By optical drive you are talking about a DvD or CD player, right?

If the laser is not dirty then it's probobly worn so will only play disc's if brand new.
You could get it fixed but would cost between $50 and $100

Not sure what "RAM is accessing it" means?

First to emergency eject, there should be a tiny pinhole in the front of the drive door. Straighten out a paperclip and push it firmly in the hole and the drive will open.

2 likely problems. One is that your laser LED has burned out, in which the drive is pretty much useless, other than that:

If you carefully dismantle the drive:
(you'll need to carefully push the open CD tray up and out to remove it from its cogs, then undo the screws and take the case apart, finally remove the metal shield that covers the rails and the laser head).

You'll see the laser head which rides back and forth on two metal rails. Sometimes it get stuck on the rails and cant move back and forth anymore. This results in a disk that still spins up and a computer that sees the drive, but no data read. If this is the case it is simple to push the laser head along the rails to free it up, grease the rails with a little silicone lubricant and reassemble the drive.

Optical drives are so cheap nowadays though, might just be worth getting a new one. At least you know how to recover stuck CDs now!

Install a roxio cd into my laptop

You need a replacement CD drive most likely.

The 5300 can be swapped for almost any generic laptop optical drive. I would pick one up from directron.com or geeks.com they have new drives cheap.

Then just unscrew the plastic mounting rails attached to the side and back of the drive, swap them over to the new drive and go!
