Question about Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook

Video I can barely see the image on my laptop (Compaq Presario R3000) screen. If hooked to another monitor,it is fine. I was wondering if I have accidentally pushed a button somewhere or where I can adjust the brightness or do I have a problem?

It's probably the inverter for the LCD, it's located at the base of the display you need to open the top panel and check the connections to the inverter board. Please be careful not to get zaped there is several hundred volts at the output ! , unplug the laptop, remove the battery, remove the 4 screws around the display and carefuly pry the front bezel off. you'll see the inverter board at the base of the display , remove the connectors one at a time and reconnect them. This may help to brighten the display. Also try pressing the Fn key and the F8 key to adjust the brightness, if this dosn't help you'll need to get a new inverter ( around 20.00 bucks on ebay) and replace it.

Rightclick on the screen, go to preferenses, check the settings, i bellive that the settings have been changed someway. Change the display settings to 1024 x 728, check that the colors are set on 32bit and check that the right screen is chosen. When you done all that press save.

Good luck

By using an external monitor, you have shown that the computer/video adapter is fine.
I'm wondering if you have told the computer to send the image to the LCD screen--using the Fn key and the special function key combo that directs the image to the LDC, the external monitor, or both.

It could also be the connection of the LCD monitor to the motherboard. You would do well to check that connection.

Problem with my screen

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

My compaq preasrio r3000 black screen cant conect to an external

have you any other A/V ports out ie Svid etc if so try that via an A/V lead, if that works reset your bios settings to minimal settings, if that doesnt work search the 'net someone somewhere has had the same problem! try shining a flashlight/lamp onto the screen whilst booting up, if you see anything on the screen then your inverter is definatly gone and yes it could still be your inverter! your laptop may have software/hardware issues with an external monitor?

Compaq Presario R3000 dim screen but not dark

Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.

If you already replaced the inverter and the screen still continues dark, you need to replace your lcd screen. Your video card is good due you have signal with external monitor.

Black screen!

lets check a couple of things. I'm sure you know that a laptop can be hooked up to a external monitor or projector, There is a button usually F5 Or close to it that will turn your monitor off and send it to the external one. In some models of toshiba this will stay in effect even when you turn it off. You can toggle this setting by holding the FN key down and pressing the appropriate "f" key. try this first before you chuck it. There also may be a problem in the bios. Let me know how it turns out. Take care..Be mucho blessed... Mark
