you may need a disk.
But try this anyway:
try and put the ipod in disk mode and find it in my computer.
right click on the ipod drive and format the drive.
then disconnect and put in disk mode again and mount to itunes.
and restore again

4. connect your iPod to your PC
5. iTunes will detect your iPod
6. then you can synchronise your songs easily, you can drag & drop songs to iTunes too

To me, it sounds like maybe you have the ipod plugged into your computer, you have itunes open and instead of clicking on the MUSIC portion of itunes, you are in the actual ipod's portion that comes up when you plug the ipod in.
To make this process easier, you should try unplugging your ipod and deleting the songs you don't want from your itunes without your ipod plugged in. Once you have deleted the songs you don't want, try plugging your ipod in. You can't delete songs directly off your ipod.
