Question about Philips Televison & Video

Open Question

Hello, I recently purchased Philips 37PFL5603D TV. Unfortunately it seems like there is a color/resolution problem, as the picture looks really bad - colour gradients are not smooth(gamma rings) and in general picture quality is very poor. I have Sony RDR-HXD970B DVD/HDD-Recorder 250GB, which I tried to connect to the TV using the standard cable that comes with the TV, then also tried Philips HDMI cable, but nothing seems to improve the picture quality. Also, there seems to be some kind of problem with the screen refresh, as it's noticeable. I would really appreciate any help, as I'm clueless. :( Are there any additional accessories needed? Is the hardware not compatible? Or maybe there are some special "hidden" settings that need to be adjusted? Thanks a mill for your help, Wirginia

SOURCE: I am trying to connect

Hello

by befault your dvd recorder is transmiting signals via component video, so what you need to do is this connect both cable HDMI and Component or just a video cable then go into setup and then select video out via HDMI your video will go off on the screen and then with TV remote slect input source HDMI on TV and it should work fine.

Thankyou

This is no solution but a point in a probable direction.

A tech guy told me ALL the LCDs they have seen in their repair shop have "swollen" capacitors, this is due to voltage instability. Lowering the internal voltage regulator and replacing the swollen capacitors (which eliminate noise) apparently restores the LCD to new working quality. Without actually "seeing" my problem the tech said that should repair it. I have not tried this yet but eventually will begin that way.

replace the coolant in the CRts. Very common problem with the older rear projection tvs. You can get the coolant replacment kit at the following link which contains the coolant and instruction CD.

SOURCE: Poor picture quality

Hello Paul. I have this same monitor, but rebranded, Access the service menu with the remote control:

With user’s RC
1. Power TV On
2. Press Menu button and call up User OSD Menu
3. Select Sound-> Balance
4. When Balance value is “0”,Enter 0->5->3 ->2 in sequence.
Note: If necessary, re-do number keys.
5. Factory OSD appears.
6. Press the standby button then AC turn off and restart the TV, which can exit factory
OSD menu.

Now you will be able to change the values for Red Green and Blue channels. I also hated this TV, but after adjusting the colors it's looking great! Hope you could fix it too! :)

Hello, I have a 60" Phillips rear projection TV

It sounds like a convergence problem; depending on your skills it may or may not be something you can do (parts cost on EBAY will be under twenty dollars).

I will attach some convergence photos: does your set look anything like these?

If it does and you can solder etc I can tell you the best place to get the parts and how to do it.

Before you rate this information let me know what you find.

I sugest you to change the video resolution settings on the PS-3 to see if TV sets to any one resolution...if you have any other video out (analog from PS3)...connect the out to TV and check video at different resolutions. If PS3 has Deep Color settings turn it OFF.

Perhaps your computer's output is at a resolution your tv can not deal with. Try using a different resolution on your computer, and the PC input is selected on the TV.

Just purchased tv and the quality of the picture is still fuzzy tried to mess around with the resolution but it still isnt very sharp at all

Hi,
The TVs produce picture using entirely different methods. Usually the colors and especially level of black color are better on plasma, LCD will have some trouble various shades of gray and black especially shading on peoples faces etc.. This is not a defect in the LCD just a limitation in current technology.

Phillips Magnavox 60in rear .....very hard to view

well......you can fix it and its not that hard but your not going to like the price of the fix. its time to purchase bulbs. as to how to do that on your particular tv you will have to search for that one on the web. sorry about the bad news. it would almost be cheaper to buy a whole new set.
