I NEED TO GET A USB WIRELESS ADAPTER FOR MY COMPUTER, THE MODEM IS A CISCO,ANY SUGGESTIONS WHICH ADAPTER TO GET?

I would try to stay with the cisco/lynksys brand if money is available for it.

Just be sure of what speed of router that you have prior to purchasing anything. It is a waste of money to purchase a better card than you have router. Examples are G, N150, N300.

If you have a N300 router and card you will be very pleased.

The router starts and finish POST then decompress image file from flash memory then shows this message: System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(8r)T8, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Technical Support:...

I don't really know what your asking but i guess you want to know why your startup-config doesn't load. What your router is displaying is normal. You need to change the configuration register.
1.Let the router load then if asked select Yes to abandon autoinstall, then select No to skip initial setup. Press return (enter button) when asked.
2. Now type the following at the prompts. (you type the bold stuff press enter after each command)
router>enable
router#conf t
router(config)#config-register 0x2102
router(config)#exit
router#reload
........save changes blah blah blah.. type NO
continue with reload Yes
providing you have a startup-config, the router will now load it on bootup.

Hope this helps

How do you configure a router to a network?

go into enable mode (type "en")
type "show run" to identify the interface you wish to configure.
type "conf t"
type the interface name e.g. eth0/0 or serial0/1/0 or fa0
the prompt should change to reflect interface mode (config-if)
type ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 (for example)
type "no shut"

We are converting from DSL to Comcast cable, both have a static IP & VPN to another site. Is there anything we have to do other then change the addresses?

As much as I know, you're correct. All you need is just change the static Internet IP from Comcast on the VPN configuration for local and remote gateway address.

Configuration

That is a very good question, but that would take way more space than this forum offers. A good router tutorial, which covers the configuration from the IOS command-line interface can also be found here.

You should check out Cisco's page on EIGRP (link) or Petri's Blog about configuring EIGRP (link), but if routing protocols are in general a new thing for you, you will be better advised to get a book that covers all protocols, otherwise this might not make any sense to you.
Look for this:
CCNA - Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide by Todd Lammle, Publisher: Sybex
You can get it at amazon and it costs you only 20$ (used) or 30$ new including shipping. Here is a link.

If you have specific questions, I'm happy to help, but in the book it's already more than 60 pages on IRGP/EIGRP alone, so I don't really want to type that all up, plus you would need some general information as well.

Unable to connect 2 routers need help!

Hi,

Do you have any funky subnets for your Cisco router? Do not connect the wireless router to your network yet, as it may have the same IP address as your other router.

Basically the easiest way to do this is to set a dedicated IP for the 2Wire router on the Cisoo router. Then make them stay on the same subnet, but give an IP range for your Cisco router, like 1-50 or something. If you give the 2Wire router IP .51 for instance, then give the Wifi users on the 2Wire IP range from .52-75 or something.

Make the 2Wire router only use wifi and not serve DHCP addresses. Then you setup the 2Wire router to get its info from the Cisco router.

I searched and there is no howto out there for doing this with a Cisco router. However, here is one I used to setup a similar scenario with a Netgear router. It worked. If you are able to translate a bit, it might work for you:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?ui_mode=answer&prior_transaction_id=306896&action_code=5&highlight_info=16778323,235,239&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fkbserver.netgear.com%2Fkb_web_files%2Fn101236.asp&answer_id=6056802#__highlight

Here is another article:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?ui_mode=answer&prior_transaction_id=306896&action_code=5&highlight_info=16777285,246,260&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fkbserver.netgear.com%2Fkb_web_files%2FN101496.asp&answer_id=6056800#__highlight

Let me know if you are able to work through this. You need to give the 2wire router a static IP and you need to NOT use it for wired connections, and not use it to serve DHCP settings.

Bootup Router and then nothing

Hi,
Your router is in the wrong mode. You need to change this by changing the conf-register to 0x2102

at the rommon prompt type in

config-reg 0x2102

reboot

If there are any errors you can get the correct syntax by typing ? at the rommon prompt the line number will go up on every line.

The way to get into rommon mode is by pressing the break key from Hyperterminal as the router is rebooting. So make sure you don't do this by accident. If you do just reboot by power cycling.

Your Startup Config should be unchanged, but you need to be very careful what you do in rommon mode it is easy to blat stuff.

Any changes you make once you get into the command (enable) mode should be saved by
copy running-config startup-config

Any problems just let me know.

good feed back would be much appreciated.

Cisco 857 router

You might need to reset the password. In order to do this, follow these directions:

  1. Console into the router, then power cycle it. As its rebooting hit the "break | pause" button on your keyboard, and you get to the rommon1> prompt.
  2. Then type rommon1>confreg 2142 rommon2>reset
  3. The router comes back on as if it were new---answer no to the first question, and sometimes it asks a second question (do you want to terminate autoinstall, or something...)---answer yes to the secondquestion if it asks. Then hit enter and you get router> in a few seconds.
  4. Then router>en router#copy start run

create a new account:
  1. router#conf t
  2. router(config)#username bob priv 15 password bob
set register back:
  1. router(config)#confreg 0x2102
  2. router(config)#exit
  3. router#wr
  4. router#reboot

and that should let you login with bob/bob
