The user noticed crackling when plugging in sound cable from laptop to Promethean board wall power unit. Upon inspection, found that the headphone port/jack on the laptop was not grabbing the sound cable correctly. Found that the headphone port casing was broken thus the cable was hanging loosely when plugged in. Don't know if this contributes or causes the crackling problem. But was wondering if this has to be a part purchased from Dell to replace (headphone jack casing?) and was wondering if this could be causing the crackling.

You should have sound from the speakers at all times until headphones are plugged into the jack, the jack then overrides the speakers and allows you to listen using the headphones. If the speakers aren't working, it's because they're being overridden by the damaged jack. The only way to correct this is to replace the faulty jacks. You could get a set of external speakers, the con is they're bulky and inconvenient.

You will have to take the machine apart somewhat, or at least to the point of being able to disconnect and remove the usb port. Here's a link to the D600 service manual download. It will guide you through the breakdown process.

You need a new one not worth fixing
how old is it when did it stop working
if you just bought it then
you need to return it and have it exchanged
there obviuosly is a defect.

No need to short out any pins, shorting out pins allow you to reset the BIOS quickly. When you leave the BIOS/CMOS battery out overnight, this will reset the BIOS (you only need to leave the battery out for 1/2 + hour to do the same thing).
*Turn off your Dell laptop.
*Connect speakers to the speaker control box.
The speaker control box varies depending on the speaker system you have.
Two-speaker systems will have a female jack on the back of one speaker that you
plug the other into the second speaker. If your system has a sub-woofer, all of
the other speakers will plug into it. The connecting cords are color-coded to
the jacks on the back of the control box.
*Plug an audio cable into the
"Audio-In" port on the back of the control box. If the audio cable is
color-coded, it will be green.
*Plug the
other end of the audio cable into the headphone jack on your laptop.
*Plug the
speakers' power cord into a surge protector to protect your system from power
surges. *Plug the surge protector
into a wall outlet.
*Turn on your speakers and set the volume at a
medium level. Be prepared to turn the volume up or
down after you turn your laptop on.
*Turn on your laptop and confirm that sound is
coming from your speakers.
