Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Power comes on but nothing happens

This washing machine is 14 years old, but has worked flawlessly all this time. We just finished a bunch of laundry the other day and now it won't do anything. The power LED illuminates, but that is it. No water flows and nothing else happens. Maytag model LAT8404AAE

Hi
The lid switch on a washer often serves as a safety switch. If the switch is not working, or if the switch opening in the lid is clogged with detergent, the machine will not run. To check and repair the lid switch:

Step 1: Unplug the machine. Clean out the lid switch port with a wood manicure stick or chopstick. Clean off any detergent buildup around the rim of the lid. Sometimes there's enough detergent encrusted on the metal to prevent the lid from closing tightly and keep the washer from operating.

Step 2: If cleaning doesn't help, remove the top of the cabinet to get at the switch. With the switch exposed, check the screws for looseness. Loose screws can cause the switch to move when the lid is closed or as the machine goes through its cycles. Check the terminals of the switch to make sure they're tight. Tighten the mounting screws after the switch is in alignment.

Step 3: Test the switch with a VOM set to the RX1 scale; procedures for using the VOM are detailed
here. Disconnect the power leads to the switch terminals and clip one probe of the VOM to each terminal. Close the lid of the washer. If the meter reads zero, the switch is working. If not, the switch is faulty and should be replaced.

Step 4: If necessary, replace the lid switch with a new one of the same type. Connect the new switch in exactly the same way the old one was connected.

Step 5: If the switch still doesn't work, it is probably misaligned. Realign the switch by repositioning the screws holding it in place, testing the switch as you go until it works properly.

Intermittant 0E error

I believe the OE error is generated if it takes too long for the washing machine to drain. If the drain is blocked or the pump is is not functioning well, the error will show up intermittently. I believe we experienced a similar error a couple of years back. After verifying the drain was clear, I replaced the drain motor, I believe the washing machine was about 5 years old at that time.

Maytag oversize capacity washer just finished filling up the tub with water. Then it had a burning rubber smell. I shut it off and on a bunch of times and there isn't even any sound. (like the mot

You need to observe and check after disconnecting the power , touch the motor, the element area or the control panel or the valves/pump.
If you notice any heat on these , it can be the culprit.
You can proceed to remove the suspected part to discover what was the reason for the burning rubber smell.

Dirty Laundry...

It has nothing to do with the filter and everything to do with a failed heater element. Even if you can get the element replaced, the machine is now seven years past it's original five year design life and you may simply find that another major failure occurs shortly after repair.

You may be able to get around the problem by switching to a cold water laundry powder. it costs more, but is far cheaper than a repair.

is the washer noisey when spinning? If so its probable that the main bearings are worn, & losing the original grease into the wash tub. At 10-14 yrs old its probably not woth fixing (assuming parts are still available)

Boom and Bang Washing Machine

Bed sheets or comforters will often get out of balance in the spin cycle or during the rinse cycle. Throw some towels in there next time at least 5 big ones. They are engineered to take a little of this banging, it should only happen once in a while.

Drum filling with water

An obstruction in the water-inlet valve may mean that it's no longer able to shut off You can easily open the valve and clean it (from scale or other dirt). Be aware you should disconnect the power cable from machine before doing it !!!! Good luck !
