well depends on if you want to hookup wirelessly with one or not. If the modem has a USB connection as well as ethernet, then you can hook up 1 computer to usb and 1 to ethernet with no problems. If you do want a wireless hookup then yes, you need a wireless router. I would just go with a router because of the convenience of being able to go wireless if you decide to. I would suggest a Linksys WRT-54GL with a 3rd party firmware (DD,-WRT, Tomato, etc.) Hope this helps.

You cannot use the UBS and ethernet conenction of your modem at the same time, so it only means that you can only use either the UBS or the ethernet connection of your modem and since you want to use to computer and get online at the same time you need to have a router to share the internet connections on 2 computers at the same time, you can get this router BEFSR41 or WRT54G...

You might follow these instructions
(although the creation of a static IP is not necessary) if you don't make it then you might have to change the IP you forward the port to depending on whether your computer's IP changes. (you can check that under the network page you find in control panel by highlighting the network you're connected to and looking in the bottom right corner of the window) (or by opening cmd through run and typing ipconfig).
