Well, whats the name of your laptop? on some laptops there is an choise to inactivete the touchpad and use an ordinare mouse. I dont know if that is an option on your laptop but check it out, and if it is an option on your laptop make sure that that option is activated.

do you see the speaker icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen? If not go to start>control panel (or settings>control panel) and then click on sound. In the center area is a sliding tool bar make sure it's not all the way to the left. There will be a box saying to "place volume icon in the taskbar' click on that. Then click on apply and then click on advanced.
This is the same menu you get when double clicking the icon in the lower right corner now visible next to the clock. if double clik on it and show the full sound menu? make sure on the bottom of each menu option it's not check for mute. then click on the options and advanced controls and you can add panels to the menu.
If this doesn't work then close all that right click on my computer select manage and select hardware and select device manager. Do you see any red x's and yellow esclamation marks? If so these are not working properly. And need to be addressed.
