It is possible that the printer is not selected as your default printer: double click the printer in the control panel and see if there's a v-mark for selection for this printer.
When having the MFC240c as default printer and the device still isn't working: The driver installed on the computer, for communication with the printer, could be not working correctly.
For a new installation for drivers on the computer you must be logged in as a user having administrator rights.
When not having the CD for reinstallation, go to the support site for a download of the drivers and software:

0. Get a download from the support link above.
1. Before reinstallation disconnect the printer; disconnect the USB cable.
2. Remove the printer icon from the control panel: delete the printer before reinstalling drivers and software.
3. Install the drivers and software.
