Power on password

My son had placed a power on password on the bios system. I went in and cleared it but now when it reboots itself...it asks for the password yet there is none to give it. We tried the old one but it does not work. Does the system have some default password that it may be referring to or is there a way to get it reset.

The problem is that I don't have any service tags with my identity. This unit has never needed service before and there is no reference with the packaging. Maybe I don't know clearly what the recommendation is saying exactly.

  • a_theriot_si Nov 21, 2008

I tried leaving it blank but it still asks for the password. The brand and model is a Compaq Presario V5000.

  • a_theriot_si Nov 21, 2008

The service tag now I see it is V5201US. By the way which compartment contains the battery I am to remove. I am a novice on this stuff.

Since you are a "novis", i wouldent recomend you to open the laptop by yourself. It's not that easy to do.

Go to a shop that repairs computers and ask the to open your laptop and flash the bios, then reinstal a new bios on it.
Every setting in the old bios will be gone. After that no more password.

Good luck!

I am assuming that you are using another computer to logon to Fixya. Your options then are:

    • Contact Compaq support and inquire as to the procedure 800-HP invent or 800-474-6836;

    • Perform a DIY (do-it-yourself) by downloading and referencing the Maintenance and Service Guide for Compaq Presario V5000 Notebook PC which maybe found here. The manual details procedures including your inquiry.

Call the laptop maker who will compare the service tag with your identity and give you a master password.

The service tag is on the bottom of your laptop and is nearby or associated as your S/N. This is how the maker will identify your laptop and give you the master password which is an algorithm based on the service tag or serial number.

How do i clear all forgotten passwords ,including dell security manager authentication password (bios)

with the power off and unplugged disconnect the hard drive for the computer. now reboot and go into the bios and try to clear the password. If it is stall asking for a password with the hard drive disconnected then clear the bios password by the jumper on the motherboard. for the cmos reset. If that does not clear it. remove the button battery and wait 5 minutes and reinsert battery and try again.

you also may have a hdd password if you do then re-post for directions on how to remove hdd passwords. Good Luck.

Forgot my dell 1015 bios password

In case of forgot BIOS password , you can clear the password very easily .
First unplug the power cables to avoid the power
Open the cabinet of your system and look for the BIOS battery on the mother board .
It look like this

Take it out and wait for 2 minutes and then again put the battery in its place
Now plug all the cables and start your PC The BIOS will not ask for password.

Hope the information will be helpful to you.
Thanks.

Could you please guide me how to remove bois possword for travel mate5730g

Steps for Clearing BIOS Password Check
If users set BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and/or User Password) for a security reason, BIOS will ask
the password during systems POST or when systems enter to BIOS Setup menu. However, once it is
necessary to bypass the password check, users need to short the HW Gap to clear the password by the
following steps:

• Power Off a system, and remove HDD, AC and Battery from the machine.

• Open the back cover of the machine, and find out the HW Gap on M/B as picture.

• Use an electric conductivity tool to short the two points of the HW Gap.

• Plug in AC, keep the short condition on the HW Gap, and press Power Button to power on the
system till BIOS POST finish. Then remove the tool from the HW Gap.

• Restart system. Press F2 key to enter BIOS Setup menu.

• If there is no Password request, BIOS Password is cleared. Otherwise, please follow the steps and
try again.

NOTE: The steps are only for clearing BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and User Password).

Check below for the picture of the HW Password reser gap. The gap that needs to be "shorted" is G77.

My friends laptop went daft last night and now she cant get into it as when she turns her laptop on she just gets the windows sign asking for her password. she has forgotten her password so cant use her...

OK, I'm assuming this is a power up password or BIOS password that has been forgotten. The only way to clear this password is by "shorting" a jumper connection on the motherboard. There is a special jumper on the motherboard where the Memory modules are. Flip the laptop over so the bottom of the case is up. There is an access door that covers the memory, take this door off and take the memory modules out. Look on the motherboard, there will be a small square marked J3 and it will have metal contacts on it. To "short" the connection, use a screwdriver or similar tool that will contact all the contacts in the jumper area. While holding this in place, power up the laptop and wait for it to go into the boot sequence. Once it boots or after 45 seconds, remove power and remove the "short". put memory back in and reboot. When you do this procedure, make sure the main battery is out. Once you reboot, it may still ask for the password, just hit enter and it should let you in.

My son set a hard drive password on my laptop & forgot it.

With most of the Acer's you can get by this problem by removing the cmos / bios battery for a few minutes with the battery and power adapter unplugged.

This will clear the password.

Or you could just ask your son about the password, no?

Need to reset the password

Make A boot disk from a working Windows 98 machine. After you make the boot disk, copy the MS 'debug' to the floppy.
Boot the laptop from the floppy.(this might not be possible due to a setting in the BIOS.)

Search online for MS Debug +clear CMOS
Run the Debug program and type in the commands exactly as written.

reboot, and you should be able to go into the BIOS by holding F2.

That's it.

If you can't boot from the floppy, remove the hard drive. the computer should boot from the floppy, no matter what the BIOS setting is.

Laptop again lol

Is this a Windows password after the machine boots, or is this a bios or power on password before booting to the windows screen? If it's a Windows password, try running a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. If it's a bios password get back to me and I'll send you a couple of links. In order to clear a bios password you'll need to Contact Dell support. The links will help only if it's a bios password. Let me know.

HELP!!!! ---- HP Notebook (zx5060us) Asks for Bios Password Now...

Hi,
If the system boots to a windows screen, then asks for a password, it's definitely NOT a bios password, but a windows operating system password. Either way, if we had it here at the shop, I could have it done in a few minutes; to bad you're not in Tulsa.
What makes you think it's a bios password?
Good luck
