Question about Tomtom ONE GPS Receiver

GPS Won't Turn On

Our TomTom has been working fine for the past four months. However, last week I arrived at a destination and when I was ready to return home, the GPS would not turn on. When I have it plugged into the car, the green light at the top next to the on/off button is illuminated, but there is nothing on the screen. I've tried the reset button, but that did not work. I'm hoping there's an easier solution than sending it in for repairs which could take weeks. Any ideas? Could it be the battery? Thanks!

My problem is exactly the same as this one. How do we replace the chips, do we have to send the tomtom away for repair, and is it very expensive? Sandy

TomTom ONE 3rd edition. Only boots up to the screen showing hands on a steering wheel, then immediately turns off. Have fully charged the battery, tried resetting from the button on the base, but no luck. It happened after I had tried connecting to the PC and updating, but kept getting error messages that a file was missing. It's only three months old and has been used three times.

I switched off my Tom Tom But when I went to turn it back on again it would not come on. It is fully charged by a mains charger & will on the charger the green light is on. When disconnected from the charger the green light is off & the reset facility has not made any difference.

  • smiffyrebel Jun 10, 2008

turned TomTom off 2 days ago but when I tried to use it this morning the TomTom go 520 won't turn on have had the unit in the home dock charging for over 2 hours as suggested also tried resetting twice but still the unit will not turn on NOTE this unit is only a couple of weeks old and from the amount of people having the same problem it seems very unreliable.

  • Brian Edmundson Jun 15, 2008

The power up problem is caused by the car charger going faulty and applying too higher voltage to the unit. This is usually caused by the white sense wire becoming broken due to frequent use of the charger. The fix to the charger is simple but the TomTom is 'DEAD'. Green light on - so the battery is OK but the unit will not turn on.

I have stripped the unit down since it is out of warrenty, and found a blown component - D8 but without a circuit diagram I can go no further.

Can anyone out there help?? I am an electronics engineer so am OK with all the techy stuff.

  • k karimi Mar 01, 2009

Every on should call Tomtom customer care and strongly lodge their complaints. This is a very expensive device bought by our hard earned money.

    The number is 08451610009.

Man it just simply shut off. the green light comes on to show it is charging but I assume it isn't as usually if the battery is charging it gets a bit warm. Mine remains cool. I think the green light has no purpose than to tell that the cable is live.

I think it is an inherrent problem with this device and the company should own up the responsibility.

Amazing what reading through the support page at TOMTOM reveals... I have the XL so no SD card to remove, but the support page explains that a hard reset by holding the power button takes 15 SECONDS. That's actually a really long time if you watch a clock. I pressed it and waited it out, and it worked. Powered right up. Not sure if I lost all my favorites and stuff but I have them backed up using TomTom Home anyway....

I have managed to fix my TomTom one.

The problem was two fold. First the diode D8 was blown and also the power supply chip was blown.

It is a tricky job, using surface mounted components so should not be attempted by a novice but I managed it.

I have a full set of photos etc if anyone cares to try it. I figured - NOTHING to loose!! so what the heck and just went for it. Taking it apart was fun! The surface mounted IC was easy to obtain and the total cost was about £10 plus 4 hours panic labour. If anyone wants the info just let me know and I will send the photos - but no promises - it worked for me.

My Tomtom One version 1 (purchased in Jluy 2007) has had the problem of going blank on three occasions now. Recharging in car or via the mains charger for several hours does not solve the problem. Holding down the switch firmly for brief or long periods ahcieves nothing. I recalled hearing that freezing (literally) some electronic equipment can sove such problems and had already successfully brought a digital alarm clock back to life by putting it in the freezer. So with my Tomtom out of guarantee I wrapped it in a couple of plastic bags and put it in the deep freeze compartment of a rifrigerator over night. Next day tokk it out, allowed a couple of hours to thaw out and then recharged for an hour before switching on. Instant revival! I have now repeated this treatment on three occasions when the unit packed in and each time it has worked perfectly. Of course the Tomtom handbook warns that the untit must not be exposed to extremes of high or low temperature; but I assure you my treatment worked.

I figured out this ongoing problem. I purchased my TomTom One second edition 1/20/07 for $395. I was 30 days past my warranty and had the problem of unit not turning on. Green light came on when charged.

I opened my unit up and found the sw2 micro switch broken. If you press too hard on the on/off button, this will eventually happen.

I couldn't find a replacement switch so I wired my own switch and it works now.

Ok...I have had this problem with my GO 510.  My solution has been to take the smart card out. Hit the reset button, plug it back in, hold down the "on" button, and it usually turns back on. Then I put the smart card back in.
Hope it works for you.

spent ages messing about and here is the solution but you have to follow this to the letter

    1) remove sd card
    2) with no power connected press reset for 15 seconds
    3) connect power source so green light comes on
    4) now hold power button and wait for it to fire (do not press power button before connecting power or it wont jolt in)
    5) put sd card back in

    good luck

Hey everyone, I'm having the same problem. Here's my story though, I have a TomTom One 3rd edition, so no SD card. I bought it and received it. Plugged it into the wall using my BlackBerry charger, charged it up worked fine. Was driving in the car with it worked great, battery started to get low, so I plugged the TomTom car charger into the car and then into the TomTom while it was on. The unit immediately shut off and wouldn't come back on. The green light would come on, but plugging it into the wall or computer did nothing. Called TomTom sent it back got a replacement. Drove a few hours with it plugged into the car using my BlackBerry charger incase the TomTom one was faulty. Worked for one day. Next day battery was low so I plugged it into the car while it was on, and boom died again. Was so mad I threw it in my desk at work and left it there for a few weeks. Finally called TomTom to get it replaced, and for fun while I was on the phone I plugged it into my Blackberry charger, hit power and it immediately turned on! Felt so stupid so figured it wasn't dead. Went to my car, plugged it into the car charger while it was OFF incase having it on caused the problem even though TomTom said it wouldn't. Surprise surprise, unit wouldn't turn on and it's now dead again. I don't understand how it could just come on after 3 weeks being dead in my drawer at work, so can't be a blown component. Going to try someones freezer trick tonight since I'm at a loss, but getting really sick of this thing. Happened both times in the same car, but different chargers. I charge my BlackBerry all the time though works fine, so I don't think my car is doing it, really have no idea...

Had this problem after upgradeing software and maps, it would only turn on if i removed sd card, then powered on, then put back in sd card. Resolution was to put card in pc, delete trashes folder, then whilst the card it out of the tom tom, hard reset it by putting pin in hole by card slot, whilst holding power button - then i put card back in when it came on - no problems now - Hope this helps

Take out the SD card and pop it into a card reader. Do not run the Tomtom home software, just open the card to browse files.
Remove (or backup) the folder ".Trashes" then stop the card, remove, replace into the tomtom and after it re-boots, turn off and on, and hey presto, it should all be back to normal!
Worked for me anyway!

I bought a Tomtom ONE XL not working for ten dollars and I found the problem I opened this one up and found the power switch is broken the thing is now the soldering it bck in place can be done with a magnifing glass and plenty of light. So next time you power it up just lightly press the power button the switch itself is very fragile.

Are you guys by any chance using a Mac? I ask because mine had the exact same problem after I ran the first update from my macBook. I couldn't turn it on, unless I popped the sd card out and back again. But when I connected to an Windows machine, I saw some special mac folders like .Trash and things like that, if you use a mac, you know what I mean. I removed those and it started working properly again. Let me know if it helps.

Had the same problem after update online. Try holding the reset button for 15 seconds the try to power up unit. Make sure your battery is fully charged. I connected the unit to my computer for two hours to make sure the unit was charged first. Hope this helps.

Thank you. This worked...I had to hold the on/off button down for way more than 15 seconds, but it did finally start up. I also made sure it was fully charged before trying. what had happened was that the fuse for lighter socket blew in car and battery in TOMTOM was completely used up. There must be some kind of circuit breaker in the device to protect it from being drained completely....just a thought....

×

I had the same problem after I upgraded to the latest software version from the website. I find that popping the SD card out and then back in gets the power to come on, but you have to do it every time. Working for now.

Posted on Nov 25, 2007

Usually in such case the problem is in voltage converter chips inside tomtom, TPS62000 and LTC3411, they needs replacing.

Posted on Feb 04, 2007

I had the SD card problem as well with ver 7.162 as solution #4.
difference is mine was connected to a linux comp....
I think that's the problem! Well spotted, these folders keep the tomtom from booting.
Ironically, Ithink the TT OS is some kind of linux !!

This is a very common problem with ANY brand of GPS. Even if you have the most current and updated map, there are some mistakes in the GPS addresses. It should only happen occasionally, maybe once every couple of weeks. As I said before, it's not unheard of for TomTom, Garmin, Magellan or any bradn of GPS

First thing to check is make sure your maps are up to date. Run your device through TomTom Home and make the proper updates. 1/2 a mile away seems too far of a distance to be off by. I've taken trips on my TomTom and even other brands for that matter, and it is not unusual to be slightly off or announce the arrival a few hundred feet too early. If it is navigating you to the wrong street, you need to update your maps. The maps are very reliable on my device so use that as a starting point.

If its a battery problem the unit still works while charging!

If not it sounds like the OS or SD card has become corrupt.

you'll have to wipe both clean & start again...

It is possible that you have the TomTom set for "walking routes" or "bicycle routes" or "limited speed." (I have a TomTom One 3rd edition, so if you have a different model the menus/icons may be different, but it's worth a shot.)

Click on the main part of the screen, while on the main navigation screen. Then click on "Change preferences." Then click the blue arrow to scroll to the Preferences 3 of 5 page. Click on "Planning preferences." Choose the planning preferences that you want. Hope this helps...
