the loud sound referred to sounds similar to the noice that would occur if a belt with shallow depth teeth rapidly slipped on a belt drive or idler wheel. The belt that is visible through the scanner glass does not show any damage to the belt teeth. However, when this condition stops the copy function the scanner arm is not in its home position on the right side of the scanner glass. The position at which it has stopped is after it has moved fully left from its home position and has moved back in the right hand direction about two thirds of the way toward the home postion on the sanners right. HELP!

  • jrmyers56 Nov 21, 2008

the suggested solution does not address the problem. The instruction given by the printer at the time of failure (loud notice when the scanner bar stops prior to returning to home position)is to turn printer "off" then turn printer "on". After doing this the printer finishes the copy function but the same problem recures with each copy made.

  • jrmyers56 Nov 21, 2008

all functions of this printer have worked properly for 2 years since installation. The present printer failure occurs only under the following 2 conditions: (1)when attempting to make MORE then a single copy when the document is placed ON THE SCANNER BED(the copy function performs PROPERLY when making just ONE copy WHEN THE DOCUMENT IS ON THE SCANNER BED. (2) when feeding a single document to be copied from the TOP FEED TRAY the problem will occur even when only ONE copy is to be made. (by "the problem" I am still referring to the scanning light bar and the loud raspy sound described in my original posting.

This error is a scanner failure. You will need to replace the document scanner (under the glass). We have a warehouse full of used HP inkjet, officejet, laserjet and fax machines. Because we have so many machines we are able to do alot of inkjet repairs that would otherwise cause you to trash your machine.

1st there is only one home position and it is on the left side, whether copying or scanning.

2-the drive gear for the scanner is bad or the belt is slipping even if the teeth are not worn, there should not be any slack,

3- if you are attemting the repairs yourself I would suggest to unplug it remove the top and see if you can slide the scanner easily w/power off, It should slide effortlessly, this should give you a better idea as to where the noise is coming from, also check the tension on it.
4-Unfortunately I really doubt you will find parts for this all- in-one, HP rarely makes parts available for these small printers.

Good luck! hope you are successful and thanks for using Fixya.

Inspect the unit if it has a transportation or scanner lock. If there is one, toggle it a few times. If that doesn't work or If lock is not present, it is already a hardware failure for the scanner and needs service as there's no user serviceable part inside the scanner.

The problem which you r reffering is a common problem faced by many users .it occurs because the gears of the pulling assembly gets cracked and the belt cannot move freely to take the scanner from left to right side or right to left side. the gear assembly is available in the market but calling a technician is much advisable because removing the scanner after opening the printers top side and side cover is not an easy job.as the engineer will be best option to do this. the problem which u r facing is definately repairable, thanks.

The fact that you mentioned "noise" is not good at all, does this sound like "crunching" or plastic "snapping"? if it does then the chances are that one of the cog mechanism's as lost teeth or broken, these cogs are located at the sides of the printer and cannot be seen without taking the printer apart.

if you have tried to re-install the drivers and software, cleaned the machines inards with rubbing alcohol, realigned the cartridges and looked for any foreign objects that may be blocking the the smooth running of the machine and you still have the same problem, i would recomend a new printer.

hope this hepls

Disconnect the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors, and then plug it directly into a wall outlet and check , if sound exists try in another outlet and see, if this fails then:

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Press and hold # and 6 while reconnecting the power cord to the product, and then release both buttons.
  3. Try making a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the product control panel.
and then try to make a copy..

Good luck..

Dirty scanner glass or dirty scan backing cover. Make sure these are
clean. Use a soft cloth lightly moistened with glass cleaner to clean
the scanner glass and the scan backing.

Try another power wall outlet and make a copy .

It seems to mechanical error in the scanner assembly. There must be something blocking the scanner from moving freely inside, or the teeth/gear is worn/broken. I don't think there is anything much you can do yourself. This will need servicing to fix.

All the best!

The noise that you hear is the traction belt slipping on the pinion, as the carriage is at the end of the rail and cannot spin any further.

This often happens because of a dirty encoder strip, a faulty return motor, or in rare occasions a defect on main board or mechanics.

Do all reset suggested by unplugging the printer etc.

If the encoder strip, that is the plastic strip near to the traction belt, is dirty or stained with ink, clean it with cotton and alcohol, taking care not to leak liquid inside the printer.

If this does not work, take the printer to a repair shop or get a new printer.

Hi,

If this is a newly installed printer, then it is possibly locking tabs or locks either at the rear or at the bottom of the unit that is placed there when the printer/scanner would be in transit or new. They must be removed prior to use.

If this is unit has been in used before successfully and this issue just happened, then it is a mechanical/hardware fault. It could be that gearing system, or a toothed belt or slider assembly of the scanner engine is damaged.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello jrmery56,

First check the connection between the computer and the printer.
If it is ok, Unplug the printer for 10 seconds and try to print again.

If it wont work, reinstal the driver of your printer on your computer and try again.

Good luck,
Dahaka

Just clean roller and check if your able to copy properly .

If you still have this problem then it is mostly hardware fault (motor is malfunctioning )

Hello, I have an HP OfficeJet 7310 all-in-one print/scanner/fax etc. I purchased about two years ago but don't use very often. Yesterday while I was trying to send a fax I received a loud winding-up...

I have same problem! The copy/scan function would feed the orginal from the ADF halfway and instead of making a normal loud feeding noise it made a horriable alarming sound and displayed an error message. To fix it: I waited a day or two and bang the top of the feeder cover with normal force while the original is feeding. It appeared the problem is resolved. I have no idea what the problem is, however I think if this work for few months at a time is fine by me.

OfficeJet 7310 FAX issue

Did anything happen prior to the issue? It almost sounds as if the DC controller (main board) has gone bad. What happens if you try to make a copy on it?
