Don't click on anything, press the number one key and it will boot into safe mode , once it does try to restart.

If you cant start windows in a safe mode (safe mode with command prompt is the one I use) to do a system restore then you will need to re-install the OS (Operating System), Sorry for the bad news....but welcome to Windows....Try running the repair option instead of the full install with the OS Disk first……Some times you can get lucky and save the existing data….Good Luck and let me know if this fixed ya,

What's wrong if your computer boots up but when it's time to login in the screen goes black?

Depending on what make and model of computer you are using i would advise pressing and holding the power button until everything shuts down and then power on and keep on pressing the F5 key then a black screen will appear and select Safe Mode and see if you can log in on safe mode failing that i would try doing a start up repair.

Setup is starting services

First try to check if you can log to your computer via Safe Mode, if you can then there is a few possible things happened to your computer:
1. Corrupted software installation that is messing up with your startup services.
2. Hardware problem (memory or bad sector in the hard disk)
3. Or Operating system or malware.

Anyway for the step to test if you can log in via Safe mode try the steps below:
Reference: Safemode
Open Safe Mode with the F8 key

All Windows versions can be booted into Safe Mode by this method. Note that it is somewhat tricky to time this procedure and it may take several attempts.

1. Turn on or restart your computer.
2. Hold down the F8 key before the Windows logo appears. If the computer makes a complaining noise, tap the F8 key repeatedly instead of holding it down.
3. If a Windows logo or "Windows starting" appears, wait until Windows loads. Then restart the computer and try pressing F8 again.
4. Once you are successful, a menu will appear with a number of boot options. Use an arrow key to navigate to "Safe Mode" and press the Enter key.

Trying to get to Safe Mode by using the F8 key can be frustrating and there is another way that uses the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).

Best Regards,

How do I unlock or reset my password? Cannot get past log in screen. Acer Aspire One

Hi laura dish

Start your computer
1. Keep pressing "F1,F2 or F8" as the laptop computer starts.(Depending on your computer)
This will start the computer in Safe Mode.
2. When the window "Advanced Boot Options" opens, choose "Safe Mode" with arrow key and confim by pressing the Enter key, then PC enters the Safe Mode.
3. Once you are in the Safe mode Click "Administrator" on the Windows login screen.
Take note that you have set the Administrator password before, you need to input the changed password instead of leaving "Password" field blank.
4. Then click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Select the account that is locked and change the password.
5. Restart laptop and login into the account you just created using your new password.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

I suggest you to go to safe mode and login in that user and check the start up items, if there is any unnecessary start up item remove it.

The screen is going black may be due to the recent virus attack or the system files might be corrupted. The re-installation of OS completely fixes your issue, If you do not want to reinstall the OS then you can check for the virus first and fix the issue.

You can go to safe mode by pressing F8 key before the OS boots up. Keep pressing F8 key once you start your pc. You will get the option safemode, safe mode with command prompt etc. select safe mode.

I suggest you to scan your pc for viruses

How to go in safe mode?

to go into safe mode, turn on your computer and constantly press F8 immediately. You will press the F8 button at the first black screen, that is, when your computer displays its log.

While pressing the F8, a windows option will be the next screen to appear, amongst the windows option, you will see safe mode there, use your keyboard arrow key to scroll to safe mode and press enter.

By now, your computer should be loading on safe mode.

Good luck.

The home screen will not display instead a small box with a red x appears. what should i do in order to fix this problem

Hi ,
Turn the computer off and then turn the computer off and then tapp the F8 key repeatedly as soon as you release the power button after pressing it .Keep on tapping the key until you get a black screen that says advance boot menu option. Then select safe mode and hit the enter key ,wait till it takes you to the log on screen.Once you are there click on admininstrator and hit enter key ,check if you get the error or not .If u dont get the error go to start?run?type msconfig?hit enter?you get the system confuguration page?click on the the start up tab ?click disable all ?apply?click on the services tab? click disable all ?apply ?click on ok or close to exit from the page and then clik on restart when it prompts you to .Then the computer will take you to the normal mode check if you get the error or not if you dont then there is a program that is gone currupt and is causing the error to come up .To find what program has gone corrupt again go to the configuration page and then enable the startup programs restart the computer if u dont get the error go to the servoces tab uncheck one or more program restart and then check so this way you will have to isolate the program that is causing the error to come up and once you find the program just uncheck that particular program this will take care of the issue .
Please try this before you do the steps moentioned above ,turn the computer off and then tapp the F8 key repeatedly as soon as you release the power button after pressing it .Keep on tapping the key until you get a black screen that says advance boot menu option. Then select safe mode and hit the enter key ,wait till it takes you to the log on screen.Once you are there click on admininstrator and hit enter key. When it takes you to the desktop go to start?all programs ?accessories?system tools and then system restore. It will take time for the restore page to come up once its there click on the option that says restore my computer to an earlier time ?click next?select a date from tha calander and the select a date when you thin that the comuter was not generating the error message. The date that you are selecting has to be in bold then click on next next to exit from the wizard and the computer will restore itself the computer will restart and now if the restore is succesful you should not get the error message.
all the best

Log on to your computer with safe mode
1. Start your computer
2. As soon as you see the first black screen when the computer starts , keep on pressing F8
You will see advanced options menu
Select " Safe mode with net working"
Now your computer will give you an option to log in with the administrator username
You need to log in with Admin and then goto control panel and change the password for your username ...

If this does not work then plz reply back stating the Operating system you have like windows XP, vista , 98 , 2000 etc...

Its on but just has a blank screen ??

First see if it will boot in the Safe Mode, pressing F8 when the computer starts up. Choose Safe Mode in the boot option. If it will boot in the safe mode. Restart the computer and press F8 again and select Start in the last known configuration. Hopefully
this will fix the problem. If not and you are running XP Pro, boot in the safe mode and do a restore. you get there by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore, choose a date that the computer was working and click Restore.
