The Only solution is to buy a big external hard drive prefurably not the one you have currently have go for the maxtor range as they are better quality in service for external devices and mak sure they are Sata drives which have better durabilaty and speed over Eide device hard drives and alot quieter and self power down when not in use and don't over heat as much with the other drives go for the cheapest one that has both usb 1.1/2.0 capabilaties this will make sure you have the correct speed for data transfer.

Double check all the power options on your PC to make sure it is not set to go to sleep or hibernate or any other process that may interrupt the backup itself.

Also make sure there is enough space to back up to.

Make sure that the interface you use to connect also has any power saving turned off.

Many devices have the option of going to sleep or turning off to save power and you would need to check the full properties of your usb or firewire card to check that.

Make sure your antivirus or any other application is not set to scan or run during the same time interval as your backup

when you have checked all that you may find that it now works as it should.

Simpletech External Drive now failing to connect with USB 2.0

Hello sir, let me give you some tips, you can dismantle it and get the HDD unit, buy a cheap external SATA usb hdd enclosure with USB 2.0 . Well all of them are 2.0 compatible (the unit without the HDD) and put it there. you can always keep the old one for posterity. hope this helps.

My computer wont read my Simpletech 500gb hardrive

SimpleTech has problems with their controller board. The HDD inside probably still works fine. You might want to get an external chassis and take the hard drive from the SimpleTech and put it into the external chassis. You will need a sata one.

Although I have seen it fail often, in your case it is worthwhile to try the 'Add hardware' wizard in the Control Panel. If you have an installation disk of any kind, have it at hand. Let the system look for the drive (plugged in of course) and if it finds it and has no drivers for it, it will ask for the installation disk but you may have to tell Win where to look for it by drive letter. If you don't have an installation disk, you will have to go through the drivers list offered to see if SimpleTech is listed.
SimpleTech still has an active website so I would check there first:
SimpleTech support page
If you have no luck you find no driver, there are several websites that have a huge array of drivers for current and obsolete hardware.
Good luck-

Can't write onto HDD

This seems like a driver confliction. i suggest you re install the driver sets that came with this unit. it should be a disk that came with the HDD. Use this disk and reinstall all software. this should fix this issue. I would also defrag the main on board hard drive as well. Sometimes, this simple tool will fix this issue as well.

Dropped external harddrive

If the drive isn't working anymore just RMA (Return to Manufacturer) it. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.

Simpletech 500 GB drive won't work (repost because not solved)

I had a similar problem with a SimpleTech 250g Pininfarina USB drive.
I went through the drivers, the power supply, the USB cables, and the various
computers, USB cards and Operating systems.
Finally I opened the case and found the disk drive was mounted too far
forward, causing the IDE connector to barely touch. I loosened the mount screws,
slid the drive back towards the connector, tightened everything down and it works.
