I have the exact same problem. I called the Kenwood tech line and the tech reported that the ribbon cable is probably broke. It is the flex cable between the head unit and the rotating face plate. He said it's not an expensive fix but we would need to mail it to a service center if you're like me and not near one. I just replaced mine with a new unit. It was about time anyways.

Tray won't close

Xbox 360 Console: My xbox 360 will keep opening its tray and it won'...

The very first thing, I would suggest you is to check the CD cover, as sometimes labels on CDs prevent tray to close.
If that does not work then do the following.
Remove disc from the tray, make sure the faceplate is on correctly.
The faceplate is the plastic piece on the front of your console.

• Press firmly around the edges of your faceplate to snap it into place (make sure it is flush with the rest of the console). If the faceplate is not on correctly, the disc tray won't close.

• If you find that the faceplate is the problem, please contact Xbox customer support to order a replacement faceplate.

If this does not resolve your issue, please try step 3 and other steps from following link.

If you wish you can also use following link of interactive troubleshooting wizard, which will assist you to narrow down on the issue.

Kenwood KDC-X717 - Facplate opens when powered on, stays open. No display.

I've had this problem before. The ribbon cable needs to be replaced. They wear out every few years. Take it in for service. Or do you want to sell it? I need the face plate for mine.

Illumination not working when faceplate is open.

Wire braid out to the faceplate has got a parcially broken wire on it. Sony referes to it as a flexible circuit board. Part can be purchased from sony directly, an on a one to 10 scale to replace about a five. But it does involve taking your radio apart. So if you are handy at electronics. you can look it over. If you have doubts let a professional do it.
