Replace on/off switch on hoover vacuum

How do you disassemble a Hoover Wind Tunnel Model U5475-900 (Bagged) vacuum to replace the on/off switch that is located in the handle. I have the new switch but do not know how to install it.

My wife picked one up on the side of the road that someone had tossed. The power switch would not turn off. I took the two bolts out of the top part of the handle, and then removed the screws along the back. This will remove the required panels to access the On/Off switch. Once I found the actual on/off button, I found it to be frozen in the "ON" position. After manipulating it for a few minutes, I got the switch to work. This machine now operates great, and I now have a Hoover :)

Following these instructions, I easily removed the panel and exposed the internal on/off switch. However, in my case manipulating the switch was not enough to make it work again once reassembled. The external on/off toggle maneuvers a cheesy little plastic mechanism that, in turn, flips the internal on/off switch. This mechanism was succeeding in pushing the switch on but failing to push it off. So, I wrapped some masking tape around the base of this plastic mechanism to give it a little more bulk and, much to my delight, that did the trick! This really is a straight forward fix with no wires/electrical involved.

I followed the directions from kovach66. There are no wires/electrical involved. Once you take out the two long screws, the top pops off and reveals an on/off power toggle. The on-off button in the handle only depresses this toggle which is located lower on the vaccum. I'm not sure what was wrong with it originally, but when I disassembled and reassembled this part, the problem was solved. Whoo-hoo!

I would recommend that you refer such electrical/wiring fixes to a professional due to the high risk of fire/shock if not done correctly.

Check the filter above the dirt tank. If you take out the dirt cup and look where in slides into the machine, there is a filter that is probably dirty. It can be cleaned or replaced

Hoover wind tunnel vacuum cleaner shuts off during use

Check the inlet down by the brush roll to make sure it isn't clogged. If not and the hose isn't clogged, then probably the thermo protector (part #28382093) maybe bad. It is mounted near the motor. Could be motor Part #43576188. But I would suspect a clog in the inlet or hose, or the thermo protector has gone bad.

How to remove handle from Hoover 5445-900 upright wind tunnel vacuum

Hoover.com doesn't have a manual specific to your model but there is one similar which will show how to remove the upper handle from the body.

Do you have a replacement switch? If not I believe you can buy one from Hoover (the switch and/or the upper handle assembly). Unfortunately your model isn't listed on the website, is this a new vacuum? I recommend giving them a call, that would be the easiest way.

Also remember when working with electronics to unplug the vacuum. Even when there is no power residual electricity can remain in the wires. If you feel unsure, take it to a repairman.

Hope this helps!
