Yes i have scrapped a couple of gateways doing this. It seems to be the charging circuit in the motherboard. it appears to be charging but its not. Try running it with no battery and just on the mains. If it continues to work ok then its the charging circuit and the motherboard needs replacing. Also bear in mind Gateway went bust a few years ago so dont know where you would get a replacement.
Try removing the battery and plug in the power adapter and then power on your laptop. If this doesn't work, put the battery back in and plug in the power adapter and try turning it on. If that doesn't work then take the power cable out and try with only the battery. Try in this order and see if it comes back up, if not, you may have some dead hardware.
It sounds like you have a fault with the power port on the mainboard or
power board (quite a few gateways have a separate power board) , the
battery won't charge if this damaged or loose which would explain the
dead battery. The smell is probably caused by sparking on the loose
power port. I wouldn't try to power it on anymore as you may damage it
further. it is possible that the area around the power port is burntout
therefore rendering the powerboard or mainboard useless but they are
replaceable at a cost. If the laptop is still under warranty then you
will need to take it back to where you brought it.
You will need to take it to an engineer to have it assessed unless you are able to make the repair yourself. Good luck hope this helps.
