Film camera flash(QB 6500A) with my new Canon EOS XT

I've heard that you cannot use an older electronic flash with a new digital camera. Is that correct?

Think it may be to do with flash timing sync. on older cameras the flash was synced to 1/125" but my eos350d works best with my olympus t42 synced to 1/60"

I had this very same situation and the professional camera shop I use said that you cannot use the older flashes, as the contacts are not the same...however, older lenses still work fine on the new digitals!

Windows 7 will not recognize my Canon Rebel xt camera, but easily accepts the Canon PowerShot Point and shoot as well as the Fuji Film Fine Pix camera. The memory disk for the xt is a Compact Flash Disk...

Canon did not produce Win 7 software for some of the older Canon eos models.
To overcome this problem Open the menu, go to the
Tools/setting2 sub menu (this is the sub menu with a spanner symbol with an up-pointing arrow and a 2) scroll down to 'Communication' line and press the 'set' button, two options will be shown, 'PC Connection' and 'Print/PTP', using the up/down buttons select 'Print/PTP', press the 'set' button to confirm the selection. The computer will now see the camera as an external storage device and the card can be seen in explorer.

What external flashes can be used for canon cameras?

Any current or recent Canon flash unit will work fine. Most current or recent third-party flashes will also work, though you may not get all of the features you might with Canon units.
Older flash units designed for film cameras tend to have a higher trigger voltage. Using such units on new digital cameras can damage the camera. Here is one list of flash units and their trigger voltages.

I was wondering if lenses from a Canon 35mm camera will work with this camera?

When choosing a lens for your Digital Rebel XT, look for EF or EF-S on the lens. Film lenses with the EF designation will work on your digital camera, but AF or older lenses will not fit. Trying to force them on may damage your camera.
When using a film lens on a digital camera, there will be a 1.6x conversion factor. This means that a 50mm lens will be closer to a 70mm lens in reality.

Error 5 on Canon eos 350D

Hi there,

Well first of all you can try a full reset, Pull both batteries out -the normal one, and the date/time one. If your camera is older (>2 yrs), it may be time to replace that battery..... anyway Put a new one in, and then put in the freshly-charged main battery, that might clear the error. If further you have the same problem then something is causing the flash to stick. Press the button and pull gently on the flash. Post comments for more help or information needed.....

Good Luck!!

Thanks for using FixYa!!

My camera canon eos rebel xt has an error code cf what does that mean ??? my camera doesn't since that code appeard.

CF probably relates to the Compact Flash memory card. It may be time for a new one. They're very inexpensive and a replacement would be the first step to discovering the problem.

Error 99 only when flash pops up

I know what you two are talking about. I ordered a Canon EOS 300d from a site called "Keh" and I had never used one before... so I get it in the mail on time. The camera works fine for a few minutes then I get an "error 99" and can't do jack with the camera. I researched online and even called keh ... I read and heard that it has to do with the lens... so I sen't the camera back and got my money.

The standard canon 75-300 lens is not considered a "fast" lens. Because of this, when zooming in on objects you are actually reducing the amount of light hitting the image sensor. Fast lenses cost $$$$. Just google "Canon L Glass" and you will see what I'm talking about. Try opening the field of view (zooming out) to allow more light to be absorbed bu the image senor. Crop your subject later in whatever software you use. You can also use one of the manual modes and up your f-stop to make the camera more sensitive to low-light conditions (higher f-stop means higher film speed.. higher film speed is how fast the "film"... aka image sensor absorbs the light. for action photos, faster film speed is key!!). have fun experimenting.
