Rat in dryer vent

With a few exceptions rats don't mindlessly chew if there is proper food around; they can be crafty rascals and can drag found food to an eating place where their droppings will be found. I am not saying rats never cause such damage but on the other hand mice will attempt to make a meal from anything and leave a trail of their "business" almost constantly. A mouse can get through what we would say are impossibly small holes and gaps; a rat can't.

A friend stayed a few nights on a camp site near a farm. The other campers except for my friend all experienced rat trouble - she put food out for them and they left her alone. With few exceptions rats are intelligent and relatively sensible and mice are mindless vandals by comparison.

Put out sticky rat traps to see what they touch. The other kind of rat traps might accidentally catch a child's fingers, but the sticky kind won't do any serious harm, and might succeed in catching a rat.

Watch and see when the rat goes for food. Then set out the food and watch so when it comes out shoot it with a BB gun.
