When I boot up my xbox and put in halo 3, my xbox makes some sort of scratching sounds. then i wait a few seconds and then on my dashboard it says open tray. there are no scratches on the disc and i have tried cleaning it but it does not help at all. i can get the game to work by opening and closing the tray a couple of times but sometimes it takes awhile and gets boring. when i finally do get the game to start up it works perfectly fine. i have tried putting in all of my other games and the xbox reads them without any problems.
Microsoft has confirmed that if you have either the heroic or the
legendary package that these discs are malfunctioned. I suggest you
exchange it from the retailer you bought it from or call in microsoft
and they ship you another halo 3 free of charge.

If this ever happens to you I recommend going to Blockbuster or something and renting a copy of the scratched up game for one day After you have done this follow these steps.
1. Insert the disk, make sure it is readable i.e. playable
2. In the My Xbox section of the Xbox Dashboard scroll all the way to the left until you have the option "play game" now press Y
3. When you press Y you will enter the game details section, scroll down to the Install Game option.
4. Wait a while for the game to install (this will take up some drive space but it shouldn't be too horrible)
5. after the game is installed you Xbox will use the downloaded files to play the game. Insert your original scratched up disk and try to play it. You should be good to go from there.
6. If this still doesn't work your disk is beyond repair
If i's only the Halo 3 game that doesn't work, and all of your other games do. Then you should take the game back to the store you purchased it from, and exchange it for a new one. If it still doesn't work, then I suggest getting a new xbox. As my brother has the same problem, but with a Call Of Duty game.
lol **** xbox live what do they know... it halo dude// i fix this by Starting a game[any game] but for halo start it then go to a xbox live match making. as it is searching for a game a wait say a minute or two and then hit the middle button and sign out [while its still searching] and it will drop you to the start match screnn and then sign in again to xbox live then start a game
Well the disc driver obviously works on most of your games except saints row 2. Saints row 2 is in mint condition well i have this problem too with my 360 it reads some games and it doesn't read my other ones well theirs a few ways one is by leaving the game inside of the console and shut it down wait like 5 seconds and turn it back on. Another is to make sure the laser its self doesn't have dust on it. And when you put in a disc listen to it as it spins if makes any weird scratching noise its probably the laser hitting the disc a lot of 360s disc have been getting scratched recently due to the fact in microsoft's original design of the disc drive the laser keeps on hitting the disc and scratching it so if thats the case you have to replace the disc drive. If solutions don't help let me know i might be able to help you more.
your halo 3 disc is scratched. I can't see how big the scratch is but a minor scratch will allow you to play some campaign missions. My suggestion would be to borrow a friends halo 3 disc and install it to your hard drive. This solution would allow you & your friends to play campaign together
This most likley a weak laser .
8 mw 633 nm laser diodes fail in stages
as they get weaker the cd ups voltage
to the laser diode till you get to full gain, affter that
it's time for a new laser .Good news
there cheap 30.00-40.00 and not too
hard to swap out yourself .
First get some disc cleaner, and clean any scratches. If that doesn't work, the only way fix your disc would be to mod your 360, and to use a program called xbox backup creator, to make a backup of your original copy. If you go this route, get a Samsung SH-D162C, or SH-D162A if you have SATA. This is the only dvd-rom that can be altered to read 360 discs, and you might need it if your 360 drive can't read all of the Halo disc. Note: for the obvious reasons you run a high risk of getting booted from xbox live, I got booted and never once played any of my backups online.
