I don't think there is a way to do this if the channel is coming through a digital reciever, like sky for example, you can test this if you turn on a terrestrial channel the subs run at the bottom of the screen, if you change the channel to digital one the subs are in the top middle ruining the viewing!!!  I found a discussion on line that i think may be of interest to you because all the members are hard of hearing or have profound hearing problems and are in just the same predicament as you:

If the tv screen shows  caption on the screen1. While TV is on, power DCT (Digital Cable Terminal) off
2. Press and hold "menu" button on digital terminal (the screen below will appear)
3. Using Up/Down cursors, highlight "Close Caption"
4. Using Left/Right cursors, put - Close Caption: Disabled
5. Press "ok-select"
6. When done, press "power" to exit menu
7. Press "power" again to turn DCT on
If you go through these steps slowly, you should have a caption-free screen!

RCA have choices for different methods of CC in user CC menu. Labelled T1, T2,
etc. . Different selections are for different types of close caption. Tune to a
signal (on your other TV) that has closed caption working.

Tune your RCA to the same signal. Change the
T1,T2, etc settings until the closed caption for your signal appears.

If this doesn't work, try connecting analog
video or VHF channel 3 (or other specified channel) to the TV. check CC. When TV
stations, sat channels, sat receivers, cable boxes etc, convert analog video
signals to HD, problems can result. Some equipment causes RCA TVs to do
unexpected things with sound and closed caption.

If you use RF or video output, old analog video may look better
on CH3 or video than on HD input and the CC will work more consistently. Watch
HD signals on HD input, Analog signals on Video in or through the TV tuner .
Many HD channels and programs are converted analog video and look poor on TV HD
    inputs.

if your TV remote has a button marked CC or CCD or SUBTITLE press that button
til the screen display reads "closed caption on" or something similar - if you
get a black box on the screen without any print in it that means that the closed
caption function is on but the show that you are watching is not broadcasting a
    closed caption [dxh]

If its Sony brand TV, press Display button on TV Remote and words on screen (on-screen-display) will disappear.

If you are talking about on-screen display, like channel number etc, its position is fixed and can not be changed towards bottom of TV.
If its some other wording information running on upper part of screen then its part of transmission and its position is also fixed from TV Station etc.

How to remove subtitles from sony bravia tv screen

You can download the user manual here.

The closed caption feature has two options:
• Captions—An on-screen display of the dialogue, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and videos that are closed captioned (usually marked as “CC” in TV listings).
• Text—An on-screen display of information not related to the current program, such as weather or stock data (when provided by individual stations).
To view captions or text:
1. Tune the TV to the desired program.
2.Press MENU, and then press x or • to display CUSTOM menu.
3. Press y or z to highlight CC, and then press ENTER.
4. Press y or z to highlight CAPTION or TEXT, and then press Enter.
To turn off the Closed Caption feature:
Highlight OFF in step 4.

I need to activate CC for my Dad, Please help I have to go to work. I have a flat screen SOYO

Determine if closed captioning is available on the program that you've selected. In your program guide, the letters "CC" should appear at the end of the description.
Locate the closed captioning option on your remote. Some remotes have a "CC" button that you simply need to push to activate closed captioning
Locate the closed captioning option in your television's menu if there is no "CC" button on your remote. To do this, push the "menu" button on the remote control. The closed captioning option will probably be in the same section as the language function.
Set the closed captioning option to "on." Within several seconds, you should see the text appear on your screen.
To use closed captioning for DVDs, look for the "CC" label on the lower back section of the DVD case where it lists audio information. Turn on your TV's closed captioning and you should see the captioning like you do on a television program. Alternately, some DVDs include English subtitles that you can turn on in the setup/language menu of the DVD.
Thank you.

I cannot get the closed captioned off the screen

I assume you've made sure the captions are turned off on the TV through the setup menu. Are you using this set with a cable box, DTV converter or satellite receiver? Most of these devices have closed-captioning themselves. Make sure you have captioning turned off there as well.

Black block fills screen

Turn off the closed-captioning. It's set for "text" and the TV is blanking out the screen where the text would go if there was any. There's probably a single button on your remote to control captions, and it got pressed and put the set into text mode. Just press that button until the TV says "off" or use the TV's on-screen menu.

Black box on screen

Check your closed-captioning setting and make sure captioning is turned off (or set for captions if you really want them). You'll find it's set to "text" mode right now. The set is blanking out a portion of the screen to display text it never receives, and you'll only see this when you view a channel where captions are being broadcast. Most sets have a button on the remote for captions, and it's easy to switch modes without knowing it. Then you wind up with the mysterious black box.

If this helps you out, please take a moment to rate the solution. Thanks for asking here!

A black box sometimes appears on my tv screen. can you tell me if this is from having the closed caption butten on and why it happens?

Yes, if the closed caption mode is turned on in 'text mode' the set will display a black box even when no closed caption text is available. the normal closed caption mode is cc1. try turning closed caption to cc1 or off. tech7

Big black box on screen

It has something to do with the closed captioning. He must have hit the closed caption button on your remote. You need to either turn the closed caption off or make another selection under closed captioning like cc1 cc2. Just keep making selections until the box goes away.

String test

Possibly the closed caption feature on this set has been turned on. There is a button on the remote control that says Caption. Press it until you turn the caption off. This will not be on a universal remote, only the original remote. You can also turn this off through the caption section on your on-screen menu.
