I have the exact same problem, even with what I consider to be fast internet it took 6 hours to download the 2 Gig update and break my nuvi 200w, I am following the directions and using the MapInstall program, located in START>Programs>Garmin>Mapinstall, so far looks like its going to work, I only selected the areas that I felt I would travel to, might want to double check that you can get to your destination before you leave.

Not one of the solutions has fixed this problem. Garmin must be clueless.

Thanks, this worked great except my Garmin only has enough space for half the lower 48 states in North America. It's supposed to have the entire lower 48 states loaded on it.

When you downloaded and installed the WebUpdater, you also got a program called MapInstall. Use it, pick the states/areas you want to install and watch the bar on the right. It will turn green and "fill up" as it calculates the amount of space needed on your gps vs. the amount available. When you have chosen too much it will let you know by turning all red.

You can ignore that huge 2GB executable file Garmin had you download. I think it's supposed to be a self extractor/application for installing the maps but has three drawbacks: One, it's painfully slow; Two, it does not work. It will go way past 100% completed and then give you a message that it failed to update your maps; and Three, once it begins the update it erases your old maps leaving you with a Nuvi that's useless without them. I tried it three times, with three different machines (after waiting 45 minutes for the Garmin helpless desk to tell me it was my chipset that was causing the problem. Nope) and got the same result. This leads me to believe the self extractor is flawed.

Once you have chosen all your states or provinces, click on the finish button and it will load those maps and you'll have a usable, updated Nuvi again. I spent the best part of a day with the .exe file because the process was so slow, and when I did it the above way it took maybe 20 minutes.

Good luck, hope you see this solution.

After searching Garmin's site I found that you can go in and make room for more maps by deleting some of the languages that you do not need, on your device, you can open the "My Computer" icon and open the folder to your device after it is connected.

I have a nuvi 200 and I live in Jacksonville FL there are many new roads, new highways and I drive a lot and want to update my GPS so I dont come to a lot of dead ends. What do I do?

You can update the maps using either Garmin or other third party maps. The accuracy will depend on how old the mapping data was that is used to create the map. So you want to find out if the map in that area is recently updated. You may also find that a regional map may show the details in some areas where a larger map won't.

To upgrade using Garmin you just go to garmins website

You may find the map update is free or you may update for a fee or get a lifetime update subscription. The gps is hooked up through the usb cable and will download and instal the updates. It's painless (sort of ;-]) and quick.

GPS Issue

You're unit is probably missing the gmapprom.img file (failed update maybe?).

Try contacting Garmin - if you've got registered maps they may send you another copy (although big file - 100+MB)
